Is earning £40K a year with 6 months vacation at 20 years old making it?

Also, if i work a job working 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off on an offshore drilling rig - what can I do at home to boost my income and stay busy as a bonus?

Also career prospects are as follows: In one year I will be promoted and will earn £56/8K a year, In 3 years i will then go for a higher exam and will earn around 80/90 and then after another 3 years I am eligible to sit another exam which will put me in the top position with earnings of around 120K a year

Pretty much willing to do any kind of physical labor, as I'm an engineer by trade and my job involves long hours and hard work

most people would regard that as a not-bad salary. oily stuff pays well, but it is sometimes hard and occasionally dangerous work and of course you are stuck on a rig with a couple of dozen russian psychos who do nothing but drink and watch porn for weeks on end.

best to use your time off wisely. you should be able to save quite a bit (there's not much to spend your money on, on an oil rig) so take a couple of weeks break and then decide if you want to work or study or just sit around doing nothing or whatever. the chances are that whatever you find won't pay as well as the oil work so choose well. if there are short term freelance jobs in your chosen specialism look out for those.

"making it" is whatever you define it as. It usually has connotations to what your parents make, but not all the time. I personally would consider 60k a year to be "making it" but there are also other factors too, age, etc.

Personally I would consider 56k at 21 to be pretty good.

6 months vacation isn't vacation, its being unemployed for half the year.

what do you do OP?

He wishes; that'd make finding secondary income very easy. It's split into 6 weeks on/6 weeks off, like all oil rigs, so time management is harder to deal with for side income.

True.

Was thinking of starting a removals/gardening/cleaning business on the side - find some asshole who will take 30% to run it for me whilst I'm offshore.

Unless you're working in Saudi Arabia, I'd not make long term plans for an oil field career.

It is dying.
You should pic up a paper or at least browse the oil general

Sounds like you just described enlistment in the US Navy
