Is it better to have smaller amounts spread around several different coins or larger amounts in one or two?

Say I have 10k is it better to stick 1k or 500$ in several shitcoins or put 4k 4k 2k in three for example?

This may seem like a stupid question but I'm new.

10k can be spread but if you have 1-2k its probably better to buy in to a single coin.

Depends on a lot of things but most people around 10k have three stacks, stable long term, risky long term and short term. How many and how much is your call. Long term risky tends to be smaller amounts in more coins. Stable is most of you stack and 2-3 coins (Use this to buy dips during crashes). Short term changes a lot and can be whatever ico or flavor of the month.

So the calculations that I just did, both come out about the same desu like assuming both methods do well, 10k doing well by my estimate turns into about 17900 ish when spread out across 6 coins, and 10k when spread across one that does well turned into 20k-ish, which is kind of confusing to me because I thought the difference would have been much more significant.

I did these substituting out different coins and estimating that they do moderately well.

Maybe I'm stupid.

"Overdiversification" is a meme, but you should not split between more coins than you can reasonably keep track of price movements and news. I have it split 1:1:1 between an overarching 1+ year "stable growth" category (xmr/eth), a 6mo+ "good bet but let's see what happens" category (currently xlm/ven/icx) and a 3mo+ low mc moonshot category (currently AMB)

half in indicators (ETH, BTC)
half in other investments

It is rarely so cut and dry. Pick your favorite stable coins to store value. Pick something with risk that may outperform the market average, and pick some short term positions that you can flip to buy more of the first two.
My advice and what I typically do.

What matters more is your market entry timing actually.
