Buying means you made current supply of that price smaller or even unavailable.
It means other people have no other choice but to buy that coin from the more expensive supply.
When you sell you add to supply of that price.

That would make sense if you bought bitcoins with bitcoins. But you're buying them with some other currency, (Dollars, Ethereum, etc.). So the total supply of coins on both sides stays the same, but the demand is telegraphed to the market with causes the change in price.
