Speaking of this, I'm working on a BS in Accounting (at night and online) at the moment and I sell insurance during the day. It's a pretty fun job and it only requires a few certifications.

This could be cool

I recommend getting your CPA.
Although it will be the worst two years of your life, firms and corporations will cream themselves for you.

For every CFO job I have seen, the sheet either says:
>CPA recommended
>CPA strongly recommended
>CPA required

Trust me it sucks, but you will be making so much bank it won't even matter.

Also, consulting, investing, entrepreneurship are all good plans, but you need a bankroll first.

>> No.682482

Do you already have the degree? If not, just try to minor in some sort of business program or switch your major entirely.

If so, who gives a shit. You can't change the past. An accounting degree, and especially your CPA, will cause people to be more trustworthy of you than they would with most other undergrads.

You can apply for positions outside of your field of study. People do it all the time. You may sometimes get overlooked for people with relevant degrees but someone will give you a chance. Work there for two years or so, then jump ship and go somewhere else. Once you've got relevant, verifiable experience under your belt as opposed to a $100,000 piece of paper your degree is an afterthought.

Another question: is a BA in Business Admin. with a concentration in Accounting the same as a BA in Accounting?

>> No.682858

>>682780
IIRC, a BA in Accounting is more in-depth than Business Admin with an emphasis in Accounting, so no. If you want to do more challenging things in the accounting field like taxes or getting a CPA, then you take the full Accounting degree. The Bus. Admin degree just lets you have a broad sense of everything business related with slightly more knowledge in accounting.

Depends what you like to do.
IIRC accounting majors can do anything finance majors can, but the reverse is not true.
>professional designations
CPA if you like accounting (requires accounting degree)
CFA if you like portfolio management/investments (any degree)

I'm a finance major taking the CFA route

Entirely serious: become a cop. Large medium sized departments love having people with accounting. degrees because you'll breeze through the schooling it takes to qualify as a detective or join a financial crimes unit

My friend is a Financial Crimes Specialist. You can get that job with a degree in Basket-Weaving or Women's Studies. Or even no degree at all.

Within finance though.

I think I want something totally different. I'd even go back to education, just not for 3 years of law school.

Any ideas?

>> No.683547

>>682300
First of all get your CPA, no way around it.

You could go back to law school if you get into Georgetown or NYU which are great for tax law and become a tax attorney.

Having a J.D. and CPA will allow you to start your own partnership with some other smart accountants you may find. Then just try to find wealthy clients locally and do their estate/ taxes.

Then there all the other accounting jobs you should know about. Financial analyst, consultant, controller, CFO, auditor, etc.

You dont have to use your B.S. in accounting but I promise there was never anybody who regretted picking it.

Never once in the history of the world did somebody graduate and say they wish they studied econ.
Its a great foundation for everything, even if just tells you how to view a company's BS or do your own taxes.

>> No.683549

Anything involving stocks and finance dude, cmon.
You think the finance guys can pick apart a company better than you can?

You should have probably taken mid-adv finance courses to get to your CPA anyways. I know I am right now.

Anything finance or accounting related honestly if you have a CPA, just depends on how you market yourself and your experiences.

You can get other jobs like marketing, operations, information systems etc but an accounting degree wouldnt help you though so yeah.

>Its like asking what can I do with a CS degree
>clearly you can do CS related shit like coding, software dev, information system stuff, app design etc. but a CS degree wouldnt be needed in something like a brand management roll or corporate development or someshit

Hey guys I currently work 40hrs a week as an office manager for $14 an hour with health care.

I'm on track to pass my first cpa section.
Do you think I could find a part time accounting job working like 30hrs a week with benefits?
The goal here is to work less but make the same money or more.

>> No.686706

Not really, the FBI is almost exclusively taking people right now who have a CPA.
Good government jobs are not easy to come by, working for the CIA is more competitive than trying to get into IB or Big law.
Really the only way is to be a vet and then have some legit academic credentials.
