Sup /biz just wondering if it's ok to cold call the receptionist of a firm for the email of their HR manager.

I don't like sending my application directly to the official mailbox and always try to trace down the HR manager of a company. This got me a pretty solid internship during the break but I'm not satisfied and want to learn more.

Now that the internship ended I'm tracing down the email address of every firm's HR manager again. There's this firm that I really like but I'm not able to find the relevant contacts. Will it be a good idea to call their receptionist and ask for it, or will I look like a fucking retard?

When I moved to NYC in 2010, I got by first job by cold calling. I wasn't able to find a job by "applying" and I would walk down the street and stare at countless skyscrapers filled with jobs, so I had an idea. I went on google maps, selected a busy street, and typed in a random address. Google maps would then display a list of all the tenants in that building with their phone numbers (it doesn't do this anymore, but maybe a different search engine does). I would then call right down the list, and ask each company if they were hiring for any open positions. Then I would type in the next largest (or smallest) address and work my way up and down the street. Then I would go on to another street. Eventually I spoke with an IT company, and they said they were hiring for a helpdesk job. I told them that I had about 10 years of experience building my own computers (true) and that I had took college courses in C++ and HTML/CSS (also true). They asked me to come in for an interview and competency exam. The exam was very challenging, but I simply didn't answer the questions I didn't know. The questions I did answer, I got mostly right. That was satisfactory to them. They hired me as an unpaid intern. After about 3 months, I negotiated a raise to $1,000/month. About a month after that, they fired me (there's a story for that too). The next job I got paid $20/hr. A month later I got a job for $35/hr.

Being poor with nothing productive to do is more retarded than calling and asking for what you desire.

I got to work on the computers and servers of about 20 different companies in 3 months, gaining valuable knowledge and experience that I was then able to turn into $35/hr and I was able to move out on my own and support myself. WORTH IT.

Well congrats, that's some pursuit of happiness shit that makes no sense but works out anyways

Don't do it. I've done sales and cold called for a few years.

Cold calling the office cause you want the job and want to "stand out" will not help you at all.

This is how it's done. Who the fuck applies for jobs as nothing but a email address and a name? You call and ask, or better yet show up if you have the chance.

Yeah that's what I heard too, hence the thread.

A senior told me to never show up in person, emailing or calling is sufficient. Showing up in person is brave but also makes you look like a faggot.

I guess this differs from firms to firms.
