How do I start up a small business by myself?

And by small I mean really small, and I don't care if it expands. If it makes me 50-60k a year I'm fine with that.

What kind of business is ideal for this?

You'll most likely lose 50-60k a year. Startups have terrible odds of succeeding.

I do consultancy for small businesses, and web design / software development.

This works well for me as there are basically no costs apart from my time, so it's not capital intensive at all. I get a few clients through word of mouth, and if I'm feeling like I'd like to expand it, then I can spend some of my profits on marketing. I haven't required finance at any point.

My start up costs:
Setting up company: about £30
Site / hosting / email addresses: About £60 for a year
Marketing: 0 (I used an Adwords introductory voucher to start with, all other marketing costs came later after I started making revenue)
