OK so I have done some reading and asking around and I hear ETH is a good move so that you can exchange it for other coins rapidly and for good prices.

ETH is both a commonly traded coin and a coin that is almost guaranteed to rise slowly and steadily. As you notes yourself differently from BTC fees aren't as high yet. So you start with ETH and decide how much of it to hold and how much of it to gamble in altcoins.
