In the U.S., all airlines have zero margins. They go through a constant cycle of "get held hostage by pilot/mechanic/stewardess unions, give out ridiculously overpaying contracts just to get back into operation, become unprofitable, declare bankruptcy, get bought by other airlines".

If you look back at the September 11th attacks, it was absolutely the best possible thing that the airlines could have hoped for -- they were all on the verge of bankruptcy again as usual, but suddenly it wasn't going to be THEIR fault that they were fucked and they got enormous bailouts from the feds, plus years of highly-paid government charters ferrying troops back and forth to Afghanistan and Iraq.

Then they all went through bankruptcies again in 2009-11.

Now we're heading into another recession and they're all going to go bankrupt again. Don't worry, someone will be along to say "I can succeed where all the others have failed!"
