to give you the skinny, hedge funds have been destroying companies (the most egregious to me, personally, toys r' us) by "cellar boxing" them. This is an illegal strategy involving naked short selling, which is basically using un-trackable (until after-the-fact) methods. using these shorts, they are able to short the company into financial oblivion, preventing the stock from going up at all because they're using an incredible amount of short-selling that isn't real. short selling to the point of a stock being reduced to pennies and ON the market they are appearing to short legitimately because they are shorting it legitimately as well in-market.

Well, after doing this many many times to many many companies, their method has been found out and the gig is up.
