Well ultimately CEXs controlled which coins would moon because if they couldn't get listed they couldn't get liquidity, so all you had to do was basically pick any hyped project already listed on a large exchange and you'd could make a 10x - 20x without even trying, I remember getting up in the morning, going on Bittrex and you'd have tons of coins that were up 800% - 2000% in the past 24 hrs.100x - 1000x was really the only thing worth bragging about.

The best part is most regular people didn't get it, didn't care or weren't even paying attention, it really felt like being a part of some hidden knowledge to make money. Now everyone is in and it's all dog shit and frog shit.

When shit like Uniswap didn't exist meme/joke coins were avoided as they'd never get listed anywhere with real liquidity, crypto projects had to at least pretend to be serious, (make a whitepaper, get a real decent team, and some use case). This made it easier to identify which coins had moon potential based on their "metrics". It was just much easier to identify a good "team".

But nowadays what do you even call a decent team? for a meme coin? what is the team even gonna do exactly?
