The girl I work with at my job just quit because she got a different offer closer to home and apparently she really wants to live closer to her sisters.

Anyway she came in early today to tell our boss in person and apparently he got very pissy at her because it would mess up the research project we’re working on. He wanted to get her to stay on for another month till they got a person to replace her but she only could work for the rest of the week.

When I got there she was crying but still helped me do our work for the day and told me she told our boss she could work the rest of the week because she didn’t want to leave me with a lot of work but I told her it was alright I could handle it and she didn’t have to work the rest of the week for my sake if she was quitting anyway and the talk with our boss had gone that bad. She said thanks and after we finished for the day I helped her move out of the housing they provided her since she didn’t want to give our boss the key in person since she was still upset and just wanted to start driving to her family.

Anyway I wanted to ask /biz/, since I just graduated a year or so ago and am new to working anything other than summer jobs how are you supposed to handle quitting on sudden notice and especially quitting a job for a fixed term or when you’re in the middle of a project? Is quitting at all seen as a dick move or does it just suck but you shouldn’t sacrifice what you consider is best for your career like that and our boss was in the wrong?

The latter, it sucks but if you have a better opportunity you should just take it. Everyone who's worked for more than a few years understands that your employer will never 'repay' you for sacrificing for them, and I've never heard a workmate shittalk anyone after they left even if we were in a bad place at the time and needed all hands on deck.

The higher-ups want to inspire this sense of comradery because it benefits them for you to he sheepish about quitting "for the sake of the team". Let me tell you, it is YOUR BOSS' job to prepare for moments like this and if they outwardly react poorly to her decision, it's unprofessional. I hope you work for a better boss in the future. They're hard to come by but there are bosses out there who would, despite the situation, just congratulate her for the opportunity she's been given and internalize the hit then work with the situation from there.

People quit all the time. It's the managers job to get enough people.

They will fire you at the drop of the hat and expect you to give a month’s notice when quitting
Fuck them
All corporations and jobs are soulless pyramid schemes

If you're employed at will, and your company can fire you at any moment for no reason, then you can do exactly the same thing.
Any "two-weeks notice" you decide to provide is merely a courtesy to an employer that has treated you particularly well, and that you don't expect to fire you on the spot for providing that notice (which btw would immediately entitle you to unemployment benefits for the length of the notice at the very least.)

As to your particular scenario, I invite you to consider a fun role-reversal scenario: Your boss has decided to let your co-worker go. She's invited to an early morning meeting with her, her boss, and an HR drone. When presented with the news of her dismissal, she gets very pissy at her boss because it would mess up her life. She demands to stay on for another month at least. You watch the tail end of that meeting, with your boss and the HR done holding each others in tears, wondering how it all went so wrong.
Yeah, this would never happen. Not in a million years.

Corporate loyalty is almost never rewarded. Your wages will stagnate compared to people who job-hop every other year. You will come to be seen as old reliable joe, a known quantity, a trustworthy cog in the machine that doesn't make waves and doesn't need much.
And it almost used to make sense back in the days. You'd stick around for the pension or something. But nowadays, unless you've got a stock options vesting schedule to consider, businesses have all but eliminated any incentive to stick around for any length of time. Plan accordingly.

Pay these worthless, starving peasants no mind. I cannot imagine moving my own body like a slave, when that is what servants are for. Anyhow, I too bought a little gift, for my wife. Because I can. Hahahaha.
