I did TurboTax this year and it was pretty easy.
Just did it 2 weeks ago, and got my refund back already. What pisses me off is that I can't phonepost from work now.

What would the founding fathers have to say about US citizens being forced to spend 2 hours while having to pay for a third party program to calculate whether they owe 25% or 32% of their income.

you're not forced to use a third party service, so they would have been fine with it under the doctrine of freedom of contract.

Additionally the founding fathers gave congress the authority to lay taxes as much as they wanted. It's true that prior to the 16th amendment there was no income tax, but that doesn't mean there were no federal taxes paid on an individual basis. Any arguments that there were no federal taxes prior to the 16th amendment (or that the federal income tax is somehow unconstitutional) are wrong. Originally congress would pass what were called apportionment taxes, meaning congress would pass a national tax, and then a share of it would have to be paid by each state driven by population. But the problem with this is that it didn't factor in income at all. So if you lived in a state with a high population but low average income your federal tax burden would be higher than if you were living in a state with a low population but high average income. So federal taxes had the potential to be highly regressive. The federal income tax was introduced because it was seen as fairer.

Btw, as a side note, the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare because of the penalty you have to pay if you don't have insurance, since that's a tax and the constitution gives congress unlimited authority to impose taxes.

Anyway, the founding fathers also had no problems with state income taxes, sales taxes, tariffs, and property taxes. Those all existed in America from the very beginning.
