Production is up, but so is human population. Also the production becomes increasingly difficult because the ore grades are getting exponentially lower and lower (chart isn't in log so it looks more harmless than it is.
Technology and cheap energy helped somewhat to mitigate but there are certain boundaries beyond which it's just no longer feasible unless gold massively increases in value.
