From a financial perspective, is it better to pursue something you love or pursue a career the is low stress and high reward? I'm about to finish my computer science degree in December but the job market is gigafucked and there aren't very many software jobs in my area. There are a fair amount of networking and database admin jobs but that's not exactly what I want to do. The shittiest part is that when I look at some of the jobs in my area, there are garbage truck drivers who are making $75k/year with just a class A license and no experience, bus drivers making $85k, park attendant making $70k. These are all low stress, 0 barrier to entry jobs whereas most of the internships that I was trying to get into had over 1,000 applicants, required you were enrolled in a bachelor's program, in the most expensive real estate in the US (the bay area), and were paying $25-30 average. Hardly any were above $35. How does that make sense? Should I just transition to a different field? I like programming, computers, and tech but I also don't want to have double or triple the stress for maybe 15% more pay than what some of the previous positions make. Hell, I might not even be employed in this field by the time I graduate so I might not even be making 15% more than them, I'll probably be making less :DDD. What do?

You should do the job that will give you skills in the field that you want to do 10 years from now. If you want to be a truck driver the rest of your life then that's what you should do -- to hell with your degree. However, if you like computer science then you should stick with the computer science related jobs. The future career prospects are a lot more promising once you have 1-3 years experience on the job. It will suck initially, but overall you will be better off to have a skill. If you don't like computer science or truck driving you need to figure your life out.

tl;dr but an admin db job might not necessarily be a low stress job just because it's easy, just a heads up. if you don't land right the first time then make sure to live beneath your means and save so you don't get stuck

Thanks, I'm sure I'll get a software job eventually but I'm not sure what I'm going to do if I don't have anything lined up by the time I graduate. I really don't want to be unemployed but I don't want to work at mcdonalds while having a degree that is the backbone of a multi-trillion dollar industry. Just seems fucked. Either way, I'll be saving at least 80% of my paycheck but 80% of $80,000 is more than 80% of $40,000

sounds like you are in the midwest

that's LOC, so enjoy that while it lasts (it won't be in 4 years), diversify your skillset, cs is good but learn to work with your hands, carpentry, generator mechanic, that sort of shit, while popping a leetcode or two every week with some academic-paper reading

you will make it

Lol.
Tech careers are done.
I have 2 years of exp including 1 year fulltime at microsoft. I have a master's degree and my skills are a mix of fullstack webshit oriented toward machine learning applications, deep learning, and LLM shit, so about as hot as you could get.
Can't get a fucking job in the current market. In 2 years when the market is back on track I'll have a hole so big I probably won't even be considered for junior jobs. Meanwhile the pajeet man marches on. Just the other day I saw a government website with the message "to add National, simply alter the condition in the loop. Here is the updated code: ```php" at the top of the screen just before a list of buttons.

Yet somehow they won't even give me a callback.
