Something similar happened to me.
My mom stopped working during covid and just sat in a chair all day watching TV for 3 years, now her health has deteriorated so badly she can barely walk without being on the verge of a heart attack.
She has always been dumb with money but for some reason not working accelerated this and she spends all day getting scammed on her smart phone and signing up for subscriptions and spending on shit she doesn't need.
I bailed her out to the tune of $5000 but every time I give her money she is back at my door asking for more. I am a patient and considerate person but it started really getting to me. I made the mistake of actually expressing my feelings and now the only thing that changed is she shakes and cries when she asks me for money now. I'm down thousands on her bullshit yet somehow I feel like the bad guy. Absolutely mind-bending. I hate my life honestly.

They got divorced 15 years ago, money was a big part of that. My dad is a poorfag tradie just trying to get by and he would rage on a weekly basis about her spending. Of course the woman he married subsequently had the same problem to an even greater degree and he got wiped out by her too.

I hate to say it, but I think she is just genuinely low IQ. I don't enjoy saying such things about my mom but there's really no other explanation, she is extremely susceptible to suggestion. It's kind of sad actually. I remember noticing this and feeling sad about it even as a small child.
The funny thing is she constantly talks about how she had to "grow up fast" and help raise her siblings but she is honestly still like a child. All her supposed maturity somehow never translated into financial responsibility. I can't really change her, this is just who she is. I guess if I were truly an asshole I could just abandon her but that is too monstrous to really think about, even though everyone is always telling me I'm evil.
