Value doesn’t control how any individual workplace will treat you but if you have value in the market you have greater mobility and greater ability to negotiate for working conditions you want. OP complained he barely makes enough for food and rent, people who have valuable skills don’t typically have that complaint because they command a higher salary.

Probably the realest comment I've seen in the last 12 boomer threads. Boomers and the silent gen had a sense of purpose instilled upon them from an early age that was lost by the time the late boomers and Gen X came around.
