The old dago mobsters were big on that scam. They'd befriend local business owners, let them win at card games and stuff, then keep dropping hints about how much they were making with money "on the street". Eventually the business owners would beg to buy in, the mobsters would "reluctantly" take their money and pay them some portion of the weekly vig until the businessmen handed them more money and usually some of their friend's as well. Then, after the mobsters felt the sucker was tapped out, they would tell their "investor " friend to get fucked and keep everything.

You can do the same thing and make money being a gangster, but, you need a gang to back you up.
