Buy a laptop and phone only for trading and security
buy old thinkpad, install linux and encrypt the entire fucking thing
write down your passwords and encrypt them onto a cloud behind 2factor + store them locally incase.

You could go permaparanoid and use Tails, but just use whatever, Arch is good and encrypt + use a good password.

This is literally the purpose of a HW wallet. Get one, and only store the seed phrase on physical media. Don't keep it in a retarded place that the government can confiscate when they eventually pull the same shit for crypto that they did for gold a century ago.

>Uhh just get an airgapped laptop instead of wasting money lmfao

If you do this, do yount actually use crypto. You're not going to connect to any dApps (like decentralized exchanges) if you're using a fucking airgapped machine. This is a good option if you don't actually use crypto and literally just buy/sell on a CEX and transfer to self custody. But if you're actually using the technology you're putting money into then just get a fucking HW wallet. They're not even expensive so there's no reason to not just spend fucking $60 securing yourself. I spend more than that on fuckin gas when minting dumb ass jpegs under high network demand.

Metamask itself is quite secure. People are just stupid and sign random stuff, that's how they get robbed.

dumb suggestions
if your private key was at any point generated online then it's not as safe as a hardware wallet generating it offline in that device only such as a trezor. (ledger = scam and saves your seed in a google doc online, don't trust that nigger shit)
