generally every shop has a fairly advanced testing machine. you could ask them to run any product through the machine in front of you. i've never done it but it seems reasonable enough. if you are even more paranoid buy your own tester and test as you buy. could be costly.

it's easy enough to tell by feel. the weight and size of the coin. buy common types (eagles, maples, krugs). also a coin shop has a lot to lose selling shit. find a reputable shop and they want to keep that reputation.

I buy gold coins and bars at a local bullion dealer store. They're trustworthy. They also have a company where they sell jewelry that has a brick and mortar store in my city where you can view pieces. Most jewelry is sold to women so only about 20% of jewelry that flows to cash for gold shops is men's but they have some decent stuff.

I think it depends somewhat on how much you have to spend. You probably want to stick to whole ounce coins when buying your first gold. That makes the entry level for gold much higher than for silver. So if you only have like $5000 or less, I suggest silver because you will then be able to have some fun selecting a variety of items and having a bunch of coins to jingle around.

If you can afford, buy some of both. They have somewhat different prospects, with silver having more industrial gravitas and gold more monetary, but most stackers would agree that they both make very good harbors in stormy economic times.
