Oh, it's pretty simple. You use the Black-Scholes or Bjerksund-Stensland American pricing model (to take into account the value of early exercise). Then you take the partial derivative and solve for each term, to calculate the options greeks. What you're looking for is a delta hedge with puts

Calls have limited downside in that you can only lose the premium you paid for the contract. So in my case a worst case scenario loss of all the premium after rolling my contracts means I'll still realize a 12.5% profit on NVDA.

Oh I was just shitposting and overcomplicating it. There are several free options calculators that all work the same way and do this for you. One share = 1 delta. An ATM put or call will have 50 delta. An OTM one will have less, and ITM will have more. Note that second-order greeks change how the greeks change. Eg, how delta changes over time or as volatility changes. Options have time value, so you'll want to buy one that has reasonable time left (eg don't do 1 week, get like 30-40 days). Puts often have a higher cost because of hedging. ITM will be more likely to expire in your favor, but cost more initially.
In picrel, you're delta neutral, but have negative theta (losing value every day). You have a huge exposure to gamma - you're betting on a huge move long or short before the contracts expire. But as price and time changes, you'll have to rehedge and either buy or sell shares or contracts to stay delta neutral.

Also I see you said "a few hundred". 60 shares is $204, so we can calculate it with 60 delta.
If you're going to use options as a hedge, I'd recommend maybe doing something that just buying raw puts. There are many different spreads you can construct that want to go to long, short, or negate the effects of time, volatility, or price. Gamma (large price movements) inverses Theta (time decay), and having different dates on the legs lets you go long or short on Vega (volatility). If you hold the contract until expiry, it might expire worthless, but then Vega/IV/volatility becomes irrelevant, only the price matters at that point.

thanks for the spoon-feeding. It's nice when people are actually helpful and kind.. ofc you could be selling me the options as a market maker behind your id
I meant 200+ shares unless monday morning I get priced out. I am willing to long term learn how being a market maker works and selling options. My understanding is I need at least 100 shares to do that and I am in a fortunate situation where a late covid stimmy check came to me. As long as MNuchin and Jamie Dimon don't fuck with me personally, I can seize the rare opportunity to buy a bank stock with historically good performance and dividends in a non-clown economy do something I can become apt enough at to not be a NEET trying to explain to family members obsessed with Taylor Swift how bad the USA is and the failure-by-design system we all live in.

i know it's such a retarded concept but i'm hoping it just crabs at worst.. i already got used to the 70s but i really shouldnt count my eggs until i actually sell

one-trick pony until they get bigger contracts than just K-12 schoolbuses and 1 major transit in Pennslyvania
im full of confirmation bias now, and my hopes is that they'll get several contracts from the huge hardware upgrade cycle with trains in NA, then get bought out at a nice premium by a bigger competitor
CEO's previous company got bought out by Honeywell and I'm half-expecting he wants to go through this route again since there's no other way for him to reliably unload his shares

these kinda pennyscams dont even announce when they'll release earnings, they just release it as the regulatory deadline appproaches so really the best plan of action is to forget this exists until mid-April

>ofc you could be selling me the options as a market maker
Imagine being paid nearly $80k or more a year to handpick $50 worth of contracts to sell to someone on an anonymous anime forum. Also marketmakers are obligated to take the other side of the trade to avoid counterparty risk and add liquidity to the markets. They make money on the spread, and then hedge a similar position based to based on what their net positions are in aggregate.
Incidentally, writing deep OTM puts causes MMs to have to hedge a certain way, and are most likely to cause a gamma squeeze if everyone piles onto it. Was it GME? There was a ticker this happened to. I think they just bought thousands of deep OTM calls.

You don't need 100 shares to do anything. You can write naked/uncovered options, but keep in mind it's effectively the same as shorting and carries unlimited risk. You may be thinking of naked shorting. You should only trade spreads that have defined risk, even if it's thousands of dollars against you; that way there isn't infinite loss a meme happens and your account won't get liquidated. You can also hedge a short spread with a long contract. Right? Because if it moves against you and you have to buy or sell 100 shares you don't have, you can just exercise your own long contract to cover. You just eat the difference on the spread.

And remember that options are standardized units of 100 shares. When you see a contract quoted as $0.05, what it really means is $5... ($0.05x100)

Risk management is really the best thing to do. It's not about the upside, it's about protecting the downside. I missed the boat on NVDA and QQQ, but how many anons fucked up with SOXL, AQB, BHS, or other leveraged things long term? The fail rate is very high. People don't have a plan or risk management in place, they just gamble their $500 and have money come in as fast as it goes out.

Not to sound dramatic but I’ve noticed a certain local sushi restaurant’s customer volume is extremely correlated to macro economic conditions. I’ve used it to predict economic ups and downs for years. My wife and I just went eat there. I forgot it was Friday, and usually this means we would not get a table without an hour wait. We were seated immediately. The place was about 2/3rd full.

I’m selling all my tech holdings and buying SQQQ on monday. There is no reason for a beautiful friday, the first warm weekend of spring, should not have that place packed with customers. Its over. I’m a bear. The COST earnings miss was the canary in the coal mine. I’m out.

I wouldn't. In most cases, they have higher IMFs than a market index. They are also designed to be focused on bluechips and growth companies to provide safe returns. In a given year, approximately 50% of managers can beat the market. When you zoom out to 5 or 10 years it's much worse. Your best bet is to just focus on a broad market fund like VOO which pretty much gives you the same or better returns, and with a fraction of the cost.
You want to hedge? Buy bonds, keep cash, or hold metals.

Also, you can just buy etfs that are sector based if you thing eg utilities or tech will outperform. Bonus: you can potentially write cash-secured puts or covered calls depending on the market trend too

Not really. Any option platform will say that options carry high risks and aren't suitable for all investors. The worst thing you can do is be saddled with consumer debt on non-appreciating assets. Most Americans live pay to pay. Some people manage to keep a few months of expenses in a cash account, but it is stupid to say, keep $10,000 in a checking account, the rate of appreciation (if any) is usually like 0.1% to 0.4%. Banks take this and immediately throw it into high yield bonds (4-6%) risk free and laugh at you. Having any exposure to high quality stocks is going to be better than like 95% of the population in the US. It is almost frightening how financially illiterate most people are. You don't have to trade options to incomemax, but it is another tool for people who are into it.
Likewise, when there is a downturn, most people move to cash and safe assets. This is game day for forex traders. No, you're not expected to do that either, but everyone's situation is different

Another thing you can consider is whether your employer has a stock plan or registered retirement fund. If it's a big enough company, most will match registered fund contributions. The only reason I have WMT, for example, is because they match 15% (up to $1800 per year) from my payroll. I funnel about $150 per pay into it, and having 300 shares I now write covered calls for additional income. But even without that, it's a free $270 per year just by maxing out my contributions. There's profit sharing and other shit on top of that.

There are also tax benefits for contributing to Roth IRAs or 401ks, but it's generally money you can't withdraw until later. Helpful to max them out, but also good to keep money liquid in case you need it.

I'm in (((Canada))) but our limits are based on what the US plan is ($1800). But yes. There's also some registered profit sharing Manulife plan that matches 1% of our income automatically. Check with your employer because it might even vary by state. Managers and salaried employees have different plans which can also include vested shares and options/warrants, typically.

For my registered plan, I have it going into two Mawer Global Equity funds via Manulife/Blackrock. It's like an 80/20 split between emerging and international markets. It gives me some diversification from NA companies, and I'm thinking really long term: in the next 20 years do you think the world's balance of power will remain exactly the same? Maybe, maybe not. If so, my active investing takes care of it. If not, this helps have some exposure to it. Personally I'm expecting Mexico and India to be strong economies a few years after the crash™ happens

no no, everything I've done was deliberate to prove/ test to myself how bad the system was and try to explain to people I care about how stupid everything is
I follow the news closely and give people in my small circle what I am convinced is insight to try to 'enlighten' them so they notice. ATT getting hacked last Friday + how bad the health of all four of my grandparents was, I got hit with a reality brick of how bad things were right now and I have family and people I care about heavily exposed to investments that they have quite literally destroyed their bodies for in the jobs they have and after gehhing inquisitive I found out they all just buy whatever moody's and stocktwit's or whatever robinhood ad news is suggesting. Inside, I wish for them all to buy silver coins and bars, but they'd never do that. They do all respect my intelligence enough that if I can put together a defensive portfolio for them to copy with write ups on why I think its resilient to a downward trend in case of my paranoia being real but still profitable if nothing bad happens they still continue make money.
I keep reading and watching resources to study the market to put together that portfolio and started shitposting here the other day as something to pass time whenI'm not trying to edify my brain.

(Which was about $80/week for two people, 4 meals / week.) About $10/plate.

I canceled our sub because we were one day late on canceling a week (gonna' be out of town for the holidays) and they refused to cancel the box and refund us.

It hadn't been shipped yet.

They offered me a "$50 credit" and I told the customer service rep, "You won't cancel an $80 box to keep me as a customer, but you will send me a $50 credit? I am telling you: Cancel the box, take the extra $30 hit, or I am done forever." They wouldn't budge.

Also, every week for six weeks in a row the box arrived with one ingredient rotted. (Raw chicken leaking, salad greens brown, etc.)

Company is trash, probably bleeding money. I don't see them surviving the next few years without a serious shakeup.

I don't think they'll walk them back completely, they might do a cut and then pause again though. I just don't think inflation or the economy are as bad as bears want them to be, Powell and other Fed members have openly said they don't need inflation to be exactly 2% to cut rates, and unemployment creeping slightly higher is something they've been trying to do for over a year. I'm gambling on earnings next week for these three:
ASAN
PATH
PD
I've done some DD: I checked their career pages and they're all hiring for AI roles, so my thesis is that they'll say AI a lot in earnings calls and the stocks will pump. They could also all dump just as easily because they're the kinds of young tech companies that mostly sell to even younger VC backed companies that are running out of money. So, like I said: gambling

That's reasonable. It doesn't feel like inflation is done when crypto is booming, stocks are booming, gold is booming, etc. But that could be temporary and misleading about the broader economy. I am new and a retard, can someone pls explain, why does it matter if a company's share price goes to 0? If hypothetically everyone decided to dump nvidia shares to 0 tomorrow what would happen to the company?

Buy back all their shares for $0. Now they are a private company.

So there is no issue on the company's side if their stock goes to 0?

They have a responsibility to their shareholders to provide them value to the best of their ability.
Shareholders, who own the company, very much care when stocks go down.
"The company's side" is the shareholder's side.

In the impossible, hypothetical scenario where for no reason at all a stock is trading at $0, a company could buy it's own shares for nothing. But that doesn't mean anything.

But that's the thing, I can open my own little company mowing lawns or something and not issue a stock but still be making some money right? I genuinely don't understand the whole deal about marketcap.

>But that doesn't mean anything.
Then why does it matter? Aside from shareholders abandoning the company doesn't the company still have its assets?

If the share price magically became $0 the company could no longer pay employees in stock and would have to instead spend a lot of cash on salaries.

No, this hypothetical doesn't matter because it is too far from reality.
Start with a smaller step, understand that, then repeat it.

What happens when the stock falls? Why does it fall? What does it mean for the company, for the shareholders when the stock falls?

Is the situation different at $900 than at $500, than at $10, than at $0.99, $0.01, $0.00?

Investors sold because the company isn't doing well and don't expect a return on their investment dragging the price down. The company's performance is reflected in its share price and if it doesn't do well then shareholders sell bringing down the price. A company's shares going to 0 means all faith in the company has vanished. So it is pretty much the shareholders that decide the total value/mcap of the company. Did I get this right?

not every company pays in stock to employees.

the point of going public is to sell stock they printed as portions of owneship. they take that money and invest in new products to expand the comapny and make more money. if the company goes to 0 a share the investors lose and all want blood and can demand the company liquidate assets to fire sell to repay investors.
