Political risk. If the dollar stops acting as the reserve currency then purchasing power will largely revert back to commodities. Mines will be impossibly over valued and will likely all get nationalized once the U.S. defaults on the dollars/debts. No nation is going to eat shit on their dollar holdings only to turn around and honor the obligations to foreign investors.
The potential for massive gains is very real in some mining stocks/sectors but also 100% loss is very real as well. I own a tepid amount of mining shares and I will not buy any more as I would rather focus on the majors that own mining rights in Canada and Nevada over Mexico.

Confiscation never happened when gold was banned in 33'. Silver was money back then, impossible to confiscate the coins from peoples sock drawers and pockets. Banks however readily gave up safety deposit boxes. Confiscation of a physical item is much more difficult than Confiscation of stock or digital asset.

its a serious risk in todays world. The best example of this was Cobre Copper mine owned by First Quantum metals, operating in Panama. The country forced the mines closure after massive political backlash, even while the project was worth 5% of the countries GDP.

i normally don't post more than "crypto nerds will seethe" (because not much more needs to be said), but i just had a thought about why gold and silver keep crabbing.

blackrock manages over $10 trillion and the vanguard group manages another $7.7 trillion. the value of all gold and silver contracts traded daily is nowhere near that much. why won't blackrock/vanguard step up and buy that for massive paper gains?

because gold and silver have uses beyond being a store of value. they're industrial metals, and if the price of the metal goes up, everything that uses gold and silver goes up too.

Canada may not nationalize the companies, but the Trudeau gov / their minions have been trying to make operating projects in the country a nightmare for quite some time. They offered federal funding to projects in the Ring of Fire of Ontario, then rug pulled the support a year later, leaving over a dozen projects out in the cold.
Permitting and planning changes proposed in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec could lead to mass corporate flight from the country, if allowed to pass. No one wants to operate a mine in a country where the permit program is constantly in flux.
