why don't people simply invest everything they make that isn't required for living so they can retire 20 years sooner

Most people don't have that much to save and invest, especially when supporting wife and kids. There's a reason they're called wageslaves. But for the people who do make enough extra, many are very risk adverse or just unaware of the option (financially illiterate).

I think most people just overspend and chase higher lifestyles. having a kid sounds like a nightmare if you're single but if you're splitting bills with a partner then a having a kid would probably come out pretty even I imagine
