It depends on how big the lump sum is compared to the discounted present value of those 4% payments.

In general, I'd prefer the lump sum so I'd have more options. If I want an annuity I can buy one with cash, after all.

There could be situations where the income stream would be preferable. It could protect you from your own impulsive decisions. It might be harder for someone to take it away by suing you. Things like that.

My inheritance will be almost entirely through an inherited traditional IRA, and since 2019 inherited IRAs have to be completely withdrawn within 10 years. I am absolutely seething from this bullshit and I am going to lose over 1m in taxes and millions in lost gains because of this fucking government you-know-whattery.
