for most people they don't know, cause they don't know what deductions you might newly be eligible for, what life changes you had in the past year(marriage, new kid, etc.), what other income you might have from a sidehustle or home business, tons of shit. the only thing they have is your W2 income from your job and maybe other forms like from a brokerage if you made a decent amount, that's not the whole tax picture for most.

if all you have is W2 income and you're single with no kids and barely any deductions or other shit, i don't know why you complain a simple file is free and takes like an hour online max.

They don't know what you owe until you file. If you're a W2 employee, your employer has just been collecting and sending the IRS your *estimated* taxes based on the income they pay you throughout the year.
