Have any of you made a career off something you're passionate about?

Currently working in IT and I hate it. I spend the rest of my time coping by producing music. Not sure if I can eventually do it for a living or I'm better off just sticking with IT and letting my investments compound

I've been in IT for 12+ years. I like it.

What do you like about it? To me it just feels like a waste of time, literally just to pay the bills. Meanwhile, music actually gives you a discography to show and there's no better feeling than making something inspiring

It's a constantly evolving field, so you're forced to learn new things. Nothing is stagnant so your brain isn't going to rot unless you are actively fighting against learning new tech and best practices. If you are fighting change, then you'll be replaced, but that is going to apply to any career.

I work in DevSecOps as a contractor for the Dept of Defense so I make good money and have access to a lot of resources especially learning tools. If you don't like IT and enjoy music, you should definitely switch directions. Figure out the path you need to take to get there and make it happen.

Do your best to nurture your passion, post your work online and try to build a following, start making money off of music before quitting IT. But I think making money off of online music sales is going to be very hard in this day and age. Be sure to focus on image and branding. You want people to like your brand so that they will not only listen to your music and relate to it more, but also buy your merch and tell others about your stuff.

I work at a fintech company

I like it too. i naturally find money/investing interesting to talk about, and the tech behind the financial world is a complicated enough ecosystem that i always have something new to learn

helps i am paid quite well

There are no jobs anywhere especially not in something like music lmao.

Music dont pay the bills anon. Don't quit your day job literally. You can produce and release music for almost zero cost in 2024 so do it. Maybe you'll get lucky but don't give up the steady income and keep banking.

Yeah, also worked dep of defense for a few years, but idk man, everyone I knew was very likely depressed. I always knew it was soul-crushing work, but didn't want to keep living with my parents forever.

Thanks anon, it's worth a shot
>>57707497
Yeah, not bad. For me I prefer just finding undervalued companies, investing in them and watching them like a hawk.

Yeah, music is a horrible bet for making money. I'll just keep producing for fun, and hopefully I get lucky off some investments, so I can focus on it full time

yeah im in the exact same position op.

as far as i've seen it's just a matter of not giving up on the music uploads and creative stuff while you fund it with crpyto / a real job.
i'm currently trying to get a real job but as a recent CS grad it's very grim

Exactly this. Can't ever stop or you lose your soul imo.

Best of luck to you, anon.

I did for awhile. Started doing pov porn with 18 and 19 yo girls on porn hub before all the paperwork. I never showed my face and I don't want my name in the records so I eventually stopped a few years ago. The only good thing is I did end up marrying one of the models and now we have a baby and one on the way

Musician who is independent and been releasing albums + singles for 5 years. (150+ songs total) Ama

>> No.57707938

>>57707910
What's your creative process for making all those songs? Do you have a strict schedule where you focus on it for x number of hours, or do you just obsessively create things all the time?

>> No.57707950

>>57707910
What kind of music and what inspired you? What age did you debut? Do you make most your money from streams/merch/something else?

>> No.57708800

>>57707938
Start with either a melody, a beat or lyrics and add layers accordingly. No strict schedule at all because I work on projects obsessively all of the time when the inspiration is present.
>>57707950
All different styles from instrumental to rock to lofi ect. I take inspiration from all different eras and styles of music. There isn't a lot of money in music at all. You're better off selling donuts on the side of the road than you are trying to earn anything as a musician without a professional management/marketing team (which takes away from the entire point of being a musician in the first place)

What do you mean by career? According to the dictionary, my physics career is going fucking great, but that wouldn't agree with what most people meant.
