This. I came to this realization when playing starcraft 2. Got to masters 1 with zerg and then when I looked at how many matches I had played versus some of the GMs who had been playing every day for the past 12 years, I decided to throw in the towel. My life has unironically improved 10 fold. If I could stop playing CS2 that would give me (almost) all of my time back from vidya but I have a healthy relationship with it and only play for 3-4 hrs on friday and on sunday. I realized that I shouldn't be wasting my youth and that a beautiful mind would be a terrible thing to waste. I should engage in more intellectually stimulating and rigorous activities while I still have peak neuroplasticity

Old video games were actually good but nowadays, you'd have to be a complete loser to still play games. Find a list of games released between the late 90s and mid 00s and compare it to a list of games released between 2010-2024. Modern releases just aren't on the same level as the games that were released 30 or even 20 years ago. Most PC or console games are similar to mobile/casino games at this point. Obviously it can train your brain to be adapted better. But it’s ultimately negligible in broader term.
For example, taxi drivers in NYC before gps had insanely better internal navigation and faster decision making, thanks to them grinding as taxi drivers in streets of nyc, but ultimately, it doesn’t make much differences.
It’s not like that I hate video games. I used to play AOE as my first strategy games and it was awesome, and then DOTA. But effect is negligible.
