rentcuck here with a couple questions. ill probably moving a couple cities over where rent is (slightly) cheaper sometime this summer and i wont have much time to actually go check out all the different neighborhoods so im trying to compare listings i find on zillow with starbucks locations or other things to try and stay out of shitty areas. what are some other ways to help narrow this search down from my computer to make sure i dont end up in the barrio?
alternatively, how the fuck can someone like me with abhorrent credit and only $8k in savings actually get into a house instead of throwing away money into rent. it just seems so out of reach now and is really discouraging my entire outlook on everything.

if you're just renting then use Google's streetview and surf around a bit. Look at the quality of nearby house's roof and windows. Leave the neighborhood and see what nearby neighborhood look like, join the city Facebook group and see if people are bitching about the homeless all the time

USDA is 0% down with no minimum credit score, but they will review your credit and potentially reject you if you're below 640

FHA is 3.5% down and you only need a score of 580

when i was young and broke i went FHA + down payment assistance - check state/local programs to see if any DPA programs exist

housing is not out of reach unless you're looking to buy in expensive metro areas
