If an asset is able to be successfully shorted, it means that the asset was overvalued in the first place. The social value that shorting provides is that it takes capital away from those who misuse it and allocates it somewhere better, ie. away from your pockets and into crypto. Gamestop company is losing relevance in the digital age and the stock price reflects this fact. Shorting just makes the price reach fair value faster than it would by waiting for investors to sell their stale bags which they would have done anyway.
