Highly suggest you read this if you want a laugh, then head on down to the comments that are 50/50 between "you are an absolute moron and shouldn't be giving financial advice" and "omg gurl you're so brave everyone else here thinks they're too smart to fall for the ol 'CIA told me to put $50k in a shoebox and give it to some stranger while keeping it a secret from everyone you know' scam!"

>Scam victims tend to be single, lonely, and economically insecure with low financial literacy. I am none of those things. I’m closer to the opposite. I’m a journalist who had a weekly column in the “Business” section of the New York Times. I’ve written a personal-finance column for this magazine for the past seven years. I interview money experts all the time and take their advice seriously.

As a freelancer in a volatile industry, I keep a sizable emergency fund, and I also set aside cash to pay my taxes at the end of the year, since they aren’t withheld from my paychecks.
>He asked me how much cash I thought I would need to support myself for a year if necessary. My assets could be frozen for up to two years if the investigation dragged on, he added. There could be a trial; I might need to testify. These things take time. “I don’t know, $50,000?” I said.

>> No.57623050

For the illiterate and lazy, an abridged version of the scam is:
1) She gets a call "from Amazon customer service" where some lady with an accent tells her she's being scammed and transfers her to their "FTC liason".
2) The "FTC liason" then tells her someone is using her name to register a bunch of bank accounts and properties around the world and was involved in drug trafficking, and that she had warrants out for her arrest in Maryland and Texas. He asks her how much money she has in her bank accounts, she says $80k, then he transfers her to a CIA agent (lmao).
3) The CIA agent (another person with a noticeable accent) has to convince her that this isn't a scam. He tells her to go to the FTC homepage to look up their main phone number, then hangs up and calls her back on that number.
> The FTC number flashed on my screen, and I picked up. “How do I know you’re not just spoofing this?” I asked.
>“It’s a government number,” he said, almost indignant. “It cannot be spoofed.” I wasn’t sure if this was true and tried Googling it, but Michael was already onto his next point.
4) CIA Special Agent Michael tells her she can't tell anyone about this, including her husband and her attorney.
>“You are being investigated for major federal crimes,” he said. “By keeping your husband out of this, you are protecting him.” He then repeated the point Calvin had made about my phone and computer being hacked and monitored by the criminals who had stolen my identity.
>“If you talk to an attorney, I cannot help you anymore,” Michael said sternly. “You will be considered noncooperative. Your home will be raided, and your assets will be seized. You may be arrested. It’s your choice.”
5) She asks if she can visit his office, but he says there's no time and they need to act fast. Then he tells her that they're going to deactivate all her accounts, including her Social Security number, and she'd have to only use cash for possibly UP TO A YEAR.

6) This is when he asks how much cash she'd need for a year and she suggests $50k. He tells her to go withdraw it without telling the bank teller why. She goes and gets it, and is informed that she'll be meeting another agent outside her apartment at 5pm.
>It’s impossible to explain why I accepted this logic. But I had been given marching orders and a deadline.
>I was on high alert for anyone who might be following me. At one point, a man in sunglasses and a hoodie trailed me for a few blocks. At Michael’s suggestion, I ducked into a parking garage until he passed.
7) She asks to see his badge, so he sends her a picture of his CIA badge (again, lmao). Then she's told she'll be giving the cash to an undercover CIA agent, because the money she has is considered seized as part of the investigation, but they'll give her a treasury check for the same amount that will be considered "clean" (jesus christ lady).
>“Why can’t I just use this cash?” I asked. “Why do you have to take it and give me a check?”
>“Because all of your assets under your current identity are part of the investigation,” he said. “You are being charged with money laundering. If we secure this cash and then issue you a government check under your new Social Security number, that will be considered clean money.”
8) She does as she's told and gives a shoebox with $50k to some random guy parked outside her apartment. The guy on the phone says they'll give her the check tomorrow, and to stay on the line while they set up her appointment with the Social Security office. After waiting a bit and questioning some other lady she's been transferred to, she finally begins to realize what a rube she is and freaks out.

Two more hilarious details:
>Fifty thousand dollars is a lot of money. It took me years to save, stashing away a few thousand every time I got paid for a big project. Part of it was money I had received from my grandfather, an inheritance he took great pains to set up for his grandchildren before his death. Sometimes I imagine how I would have spent it if I had to get rid of it in a day. I could have paid for over a year’s worth of child care up front. I could have put it toward the master’s degree I’ve always wanted. I could have housed multiple families for months. Perhaps, inadvertently, I am; I occasionally wonder what the scammers did with it.
and
>When I did tell friends what had happened, it seemed like everyone had a horror story. One friend’s dad, a criminal-defense attorney, had been scammed out of $1.2 million. Another person I know, a real-estate developer, was duped into wiring $450,000 to someone posing as one of his contractors. Someone else knew a Wall Street executive who had been conned into draining her 401(k) by some guy she met at a bar.
Apparently everyone she knows is both rich and just as much of a fucking retard.
>>57623159
I think most people wouldn't even pick up the phone to talk to the accented Amazon customer service person, but they DEFINITELY wouldn't get to the point that they go to a bank, withdraw most of their savings, and then hand it to a complete stranger because of a phone conversation.

>If this exact scam hadn't almost happened to someone I know (highly educated millennial professional) I would also have been skeptical about how this unfolded.
>The people commenting that this person was dumb or naive clearly didn't read the entire article and have no idea how gullible they themselves might be in a similar scenario. The writer clearly explains that she challenged/questioned the scammers' legitimacy plenty of times throughout, but the scammers had reasonable enough answers at every step of the way. This kind of fraud happens through a slow breakdown of reality and mounting panic that you and your family might be in danger. These people are consummate professionals. Things that seem obvious in hindsight do not always seem so when you believe you have ticking seconds to remedy a terrible situation.

>This almost happened to two of the smartest people I know. It killed any illusion I had of safety.

Either she failed miserable to communicate her thinking or her thinking was just nonsense.
Regardless, what is fascinating is her use of words/phrases, "claim of scarcity", "lack of dilution", "hedge against inflation/debasement". It all fits together, like chatGPT guessing the next word and if you didn't think about what was you where reading, it would probably pass as an intelligent question.

From my point of view, all thoughts can be communicated without specific jargon, words like dilution or debasement is just abbreviation for a quick description of what the word means; somewhere along the line the language of abbreviations became a language of itself detached from the underlying meaning, like a Potemkin village of meaning, which is in many cases indistinguishable from actual sense making.

>> No.57623515

I only read half of the article but this shit is more common than you think, these guys are pros and can put you in a situation where you feel very nervous about possibly being in danger or having made a mistake or whatever.

I had a call that almost made me fall for it. I had not done my taxes in 2017 (first year in the US) because I had no idea how to do it, and just didn't. In 2018 I was kinda worried about it and I got a random call from "the IRS" about incorrect tax information, and they knew my name and other small stuff, so I started shitting bricks. Then they started telling me that I owed some big amount, asking how much I had in the bank (which I stupidly answered), and being aggresive in general. At some point they said they'd take my car and house, which I don't have, so I was like: what a fucking minute, tell me my middle name? tell me my SSN? And so I called their bluff. I told them to fuck off and they told me they were sending the cops my way, which of course never came.

It's retarded if you look at it from the outside, but it's honestly not obvious when you're in that situation, especially since many legit calls have a similar setup. Anyway, stay vigilant anons.

I got scammed out of $40 once.

I almost felt like I'd been hypnotized. I used to get drunk way too much and make a lot of friends around a local bar, so it was normal for people to know me but me not to recognize them. Well one guy starts acting like he knows me really well and I went along with it. He starts talking to me like we're really close for like 30 minutes and I'm kind of trying to remember him. Finally he says something about how he's gonna go get some more beer for us and he needs some cash and I gave it to him. I was only 18 years old then. The moment he walked off it fucking hit me and I realized I would never see that motherfucker again.

You're on to something and that's a solid stab at the pattern, but in PV the ruse was intentional. Most people have no clue what they're doing is retarded. This ritual imitation of knowledge without understanding is commonly called "cargo cult". It's fucking everywhere. More than half of business is cargo culting and it causes an incredible amount of waste. Most humans LOVE ritual and despise doing the work to actually understand. If you're a bit clever, you can use this fact to pretend to be one of them, but eternally just the littlest bit ahead of the curve. Don't dump actual knowledge though or you'll just get ignored. Push easy answers. You'll know they're wrong. They might even find out they're wrong. It doesn't actually matter. Just give them some one win in ten and confirmation bias will take care of you.

From the comments
>Someone needs to set this straight so here we go. The Cowles family are the wealthy patrician family of the town where Miss Porter's is. Their name is splattered all over campus. They have noble ancestors, including a U.S. Navy Admiral who married Teddy Roosevelt's sister. And if you call him "Teddy" they will correct you to call him "Theodore." They are instilled with a sense of familial destiny, and keep trying to live up to their ancestors. The author's father tried to get into politics, the brother into the Olympics. Now this. It's fine to work toward great things, but this is an abuse of power. This piece is not about financial or cyber security, it's about fame. The author never faced total ruin, nor is $50K a lot of money for her, which makes the story completely bogus as a cautionary tale. It would be mean to explain all of this, except that ordinary people don't deserve to be used cynically as a vehicle for a wealthy person's fame.

Miss Porter's is apparently a fancy prep school.

Also I'm enjoying all the comments roasting her for having $80k in a checking account instead of invested. Shoulda bought BTC with that.

I work with a woman, I watched her get scammed out of $20k last October **while we were at work** on a scam call, they did the same 'spoof the number' move and did a good-cop/bad-cop split to convince my coworker to wire $20k out of an account. Tried to interject by saying that's now how banks work, got hand-waved off. Like this retarded woman in the OP, she realizes almost immediately after sending the money that she is retarded and got scammed.

This coworker more recently (couple of weeks ago) told me about a woman, boomer lady in her 70s, that she previously worked with. Both of these women were cordial with former football player and current TV personality, Michael Strahan.

This woman got scammed for $2,000,000 on literally the shittiest jeet scam I have ever seen (showed me copies of the written and email/text correspondence)

They were posing as TV producers and directors, in the least convincing and most street-shitting manner possible. I'm talking about emails sent to this woman that were purported to be from the head of ABC (the tv network) with emails signed in 72-point bold font "SIGNED, THE DIRECTOR". Used the standard DARVO tactics that apparently work like a goddamn charm. Woman reverse mortgaged her house thinking she was SINGLE-HANDEDLY FUNDING A BROADCAST TELEVISION SHOW

I had a backpacker come to my door and he tried to get my mum to sign up to spend $30 on some Cerebral Palsy thing. Cash donations or something are banned in Australia now so it has to be credit or something. When I saw him at the door with my mum I was staring at him because I didn't know who the f he was and even though I was obviously suspicious of him, I still feel played.

He said he was from the Cerebral Palsy x thing from x building in the suburb over, I said I didn't know it and he said "oh you don't know it?" -- like why the FUCK would I know about or care about some gay charity for tards? And then I walked past my door again and then he said "I think we started off on the wrong foot" and brought out his hand to shook it and I did and feel like an absolute chump for doing so. Still makes me mad. Fucking faggot tourist. I also have to make sure my mum cancels after the first payment, she said she would do one payment and thats it but I'll have to chase it up with her.

Do not give these people anything. I've also been getting real estate people come by and ask if we are selling our house. Next time I'll tell them not to come by again, I've been too NICE with these cunts who don't deserve it

Still, you can question if an Amazon higher up would contact you if the accusations included funds stolen from the company, despite the fact you would probably speak to someone federal first. I hate how women act like having sex with their wedded husband once every few days is “oppressive”. Modern women and the elite have a lot in common. They’re broadly speaking so spoiled by western society that they’ve completed lost touch with reality. They also have been brainwashed and have no idea that their old traditional role made them way happier in aggregate than soul crushing industry jobs. There’s a very good reason why so many women (like an insane number) are on all kinds of mind altering drugs and the route society took where most young men and women are going to be childless in their 40s is good for nobody except maybe the rich.

I read the "divorce" one as well and it's some woman who is mad that her husband is a more successful author than she is so she starts chain smoking and day drinking and cheats on him with a yoga instructor then checks into a mental hospital. In the end he takes her back and her solution to saving her marriage is to stop cooking dinner and cleaning the house. Her wedding photo shows that she's a tatted up whore.
