I don't really see what is so complicated about it. Everything simply carries over in whatever proportion/state they were in when the shares disappeared. For every short that exists there is a long. And to the extent individuals are not in possession of those shorts/obligations then they rest on the broker. It is their books that are ultimately at risk depending on how many shares they actually have and how many they have sold to retail. It's nothing more than a ledger entry that goes tits-up as soon as that exposure starts costing you money.

February 6th 2023 - BBBY was running up 15-125% every day for two weeks before it went parabolic and Virtu turned on the barcode algorithm.
