Microsoft should get credit for their investment in OpenAI and OpenAI has benefited under Sam Altmann's leadership. He moves fast and has made gambles that have paid off. Google has DeepMind (called something else now, can't remember) which had a lot of very very talented engineers. I guess Google should be criticised for their very "hands on" approach to investments; they meddle too much. Microsoft is more nurturing.
I still wouldn't count Google out. They will learn from mistakes and if regulation becomes clearer then I'm sure they will become more competitive.
