There's that, and so many secondhand toys floating around, why would any sane person spend $40 retail on a doll you can get at a yardsale for .50. Kids are only kids for so long; even a child's favorite toy they'll use for 10 years tops. Most get switched out in two. Baby toys last 3-6 months before a new stage of development is reached. Facebook Marketplace will give them away after because space is scarce. No one can afford a home, can barely afford rent; their space is often split with multiple people. A room taken up with toys is a room that can be rented between $1-4k depending on location.

I don’t see much of a future for companies like Hasbro. In the 80’s/90’s we had summer blockbusters with massive public appeal and merch sold like hotcakes. Toy companies were rolling in cash. They really don’t have that fuel coming their way from Hollywood anymore. Major toystores have gone bankrupt, so there’s that, too. Kids are fixated on wanting phones and iPads now as well. I’m trying to remember the last time I saw a kid with a toy in their hand, like a Transformer or a Barbie or anything like that. Kids used to run wild bouncing balls and hitting buttons on noise-making toys on toy aisles but now you see them disinterestedly following their parents shop as they watch a video on their device. Then of course there’s the declining birthrates- immigrants outbred Americans last year, and they’re not spending big money on toys. Companies like Hasbro are fighting a multi-front battle and losing at every turn.
