Yep, my family lived that history. We were some of the miners that flooded the market with cheap silver in the 1880's and 90's. We were all in on FREE SILVER. I still own a couple old silver mines they were holding when the Sherman Act was repealed and the silver markets crashed. Silver made my family rich and then it made them poor and now it doesn't really mean a lot to us anymore. A few of us are still miners though. Still digging silver and gold for a living.

I'm not going to offer my own ideas on what this shows.
For the US, I gathered info on federal minimum wages, the amount of silver that could be bought with that wage at the time (and it was a challenge to find yearly average silver prices before 1968), then how much fiat that silver is worth in today's bucks.
It gets complicate in the 2020s because of various minima is each state. But I think the minimum wage for federal employees is now $15/hr.

In my experience silver tracks the prevailing wage better than minimum wage. The prevailing wage is a function of min wage to some extent, but not one to one.

The data that really interests me is min wage vs. gold price in areas where a person can pan gold reliably. I live in a place where you can pan anything from 1-3 grams of gold a day working a 10 hour shift, and in my life minimum wage has never gone below the point where a person could make more money panning gold. The last time that happened was during the Great Depression, and half the state took to panning gold for a living.

That's quite the discrepency compared to min. wage. Back in 1980 the min was at $3.10 and the median at $4.44, only $1.34 of difference.
Now it's over 10 bux.

So in reality silver is on the cheap side of the past century, comparable to the late 90s/early 00s.
