What are puts? That is some sort of short-selling term?

puts and calls are like shorts and longs I think but I have no idea why they call it that.

those links are a nice read, but won't tell you what you're looking for explicitly. still a good read though.

to be short on something means to not have it, or have less than you need. short-selling means selling what you do not have, but you will need it to give it back.

long is the opposite of short.

calls and puts are a bit different though.

puts and calls are contracts.
put is what you are "putting" to the table, a call is what you are "calling" at the time when contract finishes.

in essence, calls and puts are contracts made in the future.
you say whether you will sell - "put", or buy - "call", what shares/commodities/whatever it will be and how much for.

calls and puts are contracts, and contracts can be bought and sold. meaning those contracts can be shorted.

so you can have long or short calls and long or short puts.
