57502655 No.57502655 [Reply] [Original]

I just found out what a project manager does.
Holy shit they actually had to create an entirely new position just so some cute girl would talk to devs on behalf of the client and vice versa.
Partly because the devs are too autistic to talk to people and partly because they’re too important to have to.
Very based guys I’m impressed and think it’s pretty funny, I am laughing like a retard as I type this out.

my first job after college was being an associate project manager and I still do it for big projects. The methods are easy enough to learn. You have to enjoy talking to people, organizing, leading and motivation people. You need to be able to think on your feet. It's a very valuable skill to learn if you ever want to do non-trivial projects

Soft-skills are no joke. Something I've noticed is that a lot of successful people are just as aspie as the average neckbeard programmer, but they've learned to fake social skills. I've been able to win a ton of favor with my boss just by being able to write good emails and speak respectfully to clients. Something a lot of people don't realize is that people would rather do business with someone who's good at their job and is great to work with than with someone who's great at their job and okay to work with.

AI will make 80% of project managers obsolete
most of their "work" is just emailing people asking "so when do you think you'll have this ready?"

>> No.57503208

If you think that job is a joke I am a "technical readiness analyst" my entire job is to make a spreadsheet line by line explaining what the customer needs to do to get ready for a project because my company knows they will not read the documentation. My day consists of about 6 meetings of me going "So where are we on the line items needed by your side" 150k a year to do this all because no business will read an email / documentation from some dev / engineer.

You guys don't get it. These make work jobs aren't going away in a big picture way. Unless a company is circling the drain there's no use in cutting these dumb little jobs it's all just a big tax dollar shuffle. Half of these "B2B" jobs are really B2Government and if you've been paying attention there is no slowing the spending deficit so who gives a fuck. JUST KEEP PUMPING THOSE EMPLOYMENT NUMBERS.
The only jobs getting replaced by AI are freelance types
>writers
>artists
Things no one gives a shit about and that exist only in the context of the private market.
Vox and Buzzfeed aren't getting floated along by govt contracts.

They mean software, but it's not like software doesn't need good PMs with technical knowledge. The field just doesn't have many of them. Without explicit accountability, the position becomes trivially faked. So most of them are irrelevant annoyances and a good dev team ends up managing their own shit at the expense of some efficiency.
I've found that the closer you get to business as an abstract, the easier it is to turn optional roles into do nothing scams. You can't easily fake being a dev because the product needs to actually be built, and coworkers on equal footing will rat you out. PM though? Dev complaints fall on deaf ears, but your only truly demanded output is a spreadsheet and shooting the shit with management. I expect in other engineering fields there's some regulatory reason for PMs to exist, making their required output too high a bar for a scammer to leap.
