you are literally describing the concept of rolling out in your response... are you suggesting that SPY will be above $488 by 2/16 but under $488 by 2/23? Plus I already answered you, but here I will do it again...

What prevents me from doing that is that I am extending the risk for the same strike price. If the market keeps rallying the next 2 weeks then I'm still stuck with the same $488 strike making it a worse and worse deal. At some point I would either have to part with the shares at $488 or realize the loss on the calls and stop trying to roll them out at the same strike. Plus once you buy them back you realized the loss anyways, so it would be retarded to just turn around and immediately sell 3 $488 way ITM calls and pray for a crash. I'm deciding to part with the shares vs playing the rollout game. Is that so retarded? With my method if the market keeps rallying I will at least get to sell 100 shares at $496 and 100 shares at next weeks ATM price along with the 300 shares at $488. Then I can turn around and sell cash secured puts or DCA into another play elsewhere. What is so wrong with that thinking? VS your idea of just rolling the $488s to next week until the market drops below it (which is no guarantee any time soon)

See... this is exactly what the conditional order prevents. You are trading your written calls for a new bunch of written calls in one fell swoop. If you are putting in the order for a price of +/-0.00 (zero) your actual fill is highly likely to be at a credit. So you are collecting a little bit of additional premium even.

My recommendation for when I'm eyeballing something to buy is to try and average it over time. In my experience over the years trading going in all at once unless you are very certain of a swing in price is a bad idea. It's better to be patient with your money and split it up buying chunks and averaging down. I say this because right now the potential for break throughs in the space frontier are only growing but there will be growing pains happening as well for these companies.

A proper broker (schwab/tos/to, ibkr) lets you input complex orders like that. It's more common than people realize.
For example a box spread is conditional to four trades with exact specifics. So don't worry about the complexity of what I am describing here.
