The good thing about this story though is i'm getting increasingly sharper at detecting them. For this one the challenge was pretty low.

Also to all the newfrens getting scared about numismatics, it's one thing to see a picture online (often low res), but the gut feeling when you have it in your hands is your best ally (alongside all the tools you might need : precision scale, caliper, jeweler loupe cost close to nothing and will help you greatly to make up your mind if you are in doubt).
The more you handle coins, the harder it will be to fool you. And truth is even if you didn't detect it on the pictures, once you get it in your hand and are a bit familiar, most fakes don't stand a chance, their quality is almost always quite mediocre. So fondle your coins day in and day out for your reptilian brain to get accustomed to the real stuff.

but almost any solvent that will attack gold turns it black. The main options are cyanide, aqua regia, chlorine, and mercury. There are a few other bromides that will corrode gold but they're rare.

heat is another possibility. I've seen coins damaged on one side from laying on the ground under a burning house.

it sounds like an interesting coin, but I don't know what you'd do with it except make jewelry that only shows the good side. I personally wouldn't pay much more than melt unless the black side was really attractive.

her hobby is going to auctions and buying things at low prices, (in the case of gold and silver jewelry, at melt/scrap price or lower) and reselling it at an another auction at like x10 to sometimes x200 the price. she has a background in art history, so she has an eye for detail. there's several things you need to look out for and know. first of all, go to auctions for estates of a rich deceased, who else family can't be arsed to sort most of the stuff themselves and get the staff to do it. in some of the less expensive lots there can be small expensive items that get can easily overlooked and be worth a fuckton. one time she got a ring that was worth thousands for $5 because it was stuffed in a lot of costume jewelry. also keep an eye out for stirling silver utensils, especially if the estate has multiple, not everyone will be looking at that stuff and it can be picked up for cheap. and most people can't identify real gemstones from costume jewelry, especially old people with bad eyesight, so keep an eye out for stuff that's been mislabeled and is worth more.

more and more rich boomers are dying off and their wealthy kids can't be bothered to sort through all their expensive stuff, so keep an eye out. my mother is fortunate enough that the nearest auction house that deals with them is like an hour's drive away.

As of 2019 or maybe 2018, states that take sales tax can now require e-commerce sites to charge out-of-state business sales tax. As businesses learn which states requires taxes for what types of sales and for how much, there has been a sort of wild-west of what vendors tax. whats your find rate been? i used to do that 10 years ago and even back then it was abysmal. everyone searches halves, they are the most searched denomination. i always had the best luck with quarters. with halves i would find silver like once every 10 boxes, and sometimes nothing for 20+ boxes. cant imagine how bad it is now when everyone knows about this from jewtube
