My completely outsider explanation is that Eric is well and truly part of the Washington establishment. And he came to SmartCon last year fully thinking that Chainlink, a US company (he thought), was going to build a US first solution.
But then two things happened. The first was that the US establishment went fanatically anti-crypto. The second was that Chainlink didn't blink, and put more focus into China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore.
At which point Eric realised that Chainlink had no intention of kowtowing to US regulatory bullying, and was perfectly happy to go with whoever fast-tracked adoption.
Which means a lot of his Washington buddies were probably seething, and he came to SmartCon 2023 with a much less rose-tinted view of Chainlink's aspirations and who they were wiling to work with.
