Anyone hang out with normies who lease pic-related or similar for $500-1000 / month and tell you that you should definitely upgrade your $5,000 shitbox?

What reasoning do they use? Is it safety?

Owning multiple cars is always a shit. Also, I am not convinced the $5000 shitbox actually saves you money if you keep it top-notch. You literally replace everything - I am too lazy to list out the parts so you believe me I know what I am talking about, but everything related to the clutch and the suspension and the brakes will get swapped if you want to drive a shitbox normally. And that's on top of sensors and random electronics like ignition coil, injectors, air cabin heat distributor, etc.

Nope.
Dave Ramsay says that you should save double-the price of your car before you buy one. So if you want to buy a $50k car, you should have $100k saved up.

When I spent $54,000 on an Audi a few years ago, I had already saved up $250k in my brokerage account, and had over $500k in my total assets.
Most of my friends are the same way, they have nice cars but they also invest a lot too.

Any new car you buy now will depreciate at least $20k by the time the warranty runs out. What paid-off shitbox will incur $20k in repairs over the course of a decade? I guess a Rolls Royce or a Ferrari would.

No, I don't give a shit about that, and anyone who says crap like that is a complete loser.
I also don't have Gap insurance. I don't know why you would want to pay extra for that. Just drive safe.

> What paid-off shitbox will incur $20k in repairs over the course of a decade?
Easy if you aren't doing the work yourself.
> clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, fork: Easily 3-5k
> full suspensions easily 2-4k
> calipers, disks, pads, lines + bleed all around: 1-1.5k
> A/C - 1.5k
> exhaust 1k (especially if you do all the way to headers)

Those are Civic prices. That's an INCOMPLETE list of what needs done on 5k Civic (with 150k+ on it). I am not even talking engine mounts, MC, and other random shit.

A used car is a good deal if you have nothing and/or want something that just runs but meets no other criteria. If you want your old car comfy, it gets almost as expensive as depreciation. The only thing is that you can get a higher performance car than you normally would.

>>57105350

What the fuck no. I have a 10 year old civic with 155k on it. Bought it new back then and have done almost all the work myself. The only thing other than oil, coolant, trans fluid (cvt, yes it's reliable), plugs and brake pads I've needed to do was the front bearings, which cost $600, and two calipers which were a couple hundred bucks maybe. Maintenance per year is under $1,000. I have NOT been kind to my car either. It gets thrown around twisty rural roads for fun, and has had to do many years of rough winter service practically immersed in salt and beat up by frost heaven roads. Plus two years of me living on a long and very shitty dirt road which I commuted over every day and seemed to always be disgustingly muddy. The fucking car looks and drives nearly like new. My only complaint is the stupid snap clips on the nvh panels get shitty and just break when you pop them off after a handful of years, so when I go 80+ a couple of them flutter a bit and it's annoying.

Tldr; im a hardcore car guy. Here’s a few tips
Never buy new, always buy ~2year used with 20-40k miles. Biggest hit to depreciation is taken by someone else while you take over what is essentially a near new car.
Never buy the first model year of anything.
Buy cars that don’t do a model refresh often. For example any modern volvo product or a Maserati. A Volvo XC90 still looks like a fresh luxury suv despite coming out in 2016. A comparable Mercedes GLE was facelifted in 2015 and outdated/replaced by 2020. Buying a new Mercedes or BMW with a <5year cycle life is about as smart as lighting a bonfire with your cash. Unironically Maserati is one of the smartest moves. New ones depreciation like a rock in the first 1-2 years and the model cycle life is suuuper long. The Maserati Levante is still on sale after getting lunched in 2016. The previous gen Maserati gran turismo was on sale from 2007 to 2019 and not only made you look rich but was arguably one of the most beautiful design coupes…ever. And no headache of trying to “keep up” with whatever new model is coming due to the long cycle time.
So yea, buy 1-2 year old cars from brands with long cycle times and timeless designs. That’s the trick

I live in heavy road salt area and congested urban area. I spent 15k maintaining a first gen crv over 75,000 miles. It broke the lower ball joints 3x and had to be towed. Each time the lower ball joint broke, and the wheel essentially fell off while at highway speed, it incurred several other broken components for an average repair cost including tow or ~$2500 3x. The other $7,500 of repairs included tires 2x (~$1,200), complete exhaust system 2x ($1,000), gas tank & fuel filler neck ($800) and random bullshit I had to fix myself from getting rear ended, side impact, and head on collisions at low speed. I paid $2,000 for the car with 80,000 miles in good condition and about $1,800 per year in insurance. Cheap cars are only cheap if you can fix it yourself. I could’ve bought another car at any point and given I was hit 3x in that car didn’t want an expensive car for fear of being hit. I thought being frugal was smart. That’s bs advice lol
Every car I had except for my first one was over 95k and I alway lease my cars. I buy them on my business so it’s different but the % you pay on a carlease is so low (atleast where I live) that I am making more investing the amount of the car than I pay interest on the lease.

For example my current car is a brand new Porsche cayenne coupe (just got it delivered btw!) and it costed me 167k, I did a 0% downpayment and pay 2380/month for 59 months and 20% the 60th month. In 5 years I can sell this car for 90-110k so in reality it only costed me 70k ish for 5 years (excluding insurance, maintenance and taxes).
But I can use that 167k to buy a renovation project or put it in the stock market or whatever. I can easily make 6-10% a year so buying that car instead of leasing would lose me atleast 60k a year

no i seriously look down on anyone who cant lock up >$10k in a vehicle that they can drive until theyre tired of it then sell it (with minimal depreciation) into a very liquid market. oil changes, tire changes, and mechanic work are for slaves.

It's about not being comfortable with your own skin and needing to extend your sense of worth to material things.

If a man has no achievments he'll go for a job title that makes it well respected. Not fufilling or well earning.

If a man has no reason to drive anywhere to see friends or family, they'll buy a nice car to always have one reason to drive anywhere. Showing off their nice car.

Luckily I hang out with mostly in between trades and college folk. Shitboxes and Trucks are their number one pick.

My favorite is the flex where they still keep a 2006 toyota sequoia running in 2023. Fuck your bmw series 3, a toyota with over 300000 mileage is a mark of a true car lover.

Only place I believe BMW's should exist regularly is Germany, Austria, Spain and Russia. They manufacture them, they are all drivable from factory onto roads that at least pull their full potential, and they can teach bad drivers fast mistakes.

its not a bad deal. brand new car for $500 a month vs $500 a month on average for repairs on a beat to hell 200,000 mile corolla/civic/whatever

It depends on your situation.
If you're poor and renting then it's retarded to spend that much money on leasing a car and basically poor people behavior.
If you have money invested and own your own property then you don't need to live like a turbo-poor so you can splash out on a few luxury items. Cars hold no value in the medium to long term so getting one and trading it in for a new model every 2-3 years imo is a no-brainer, especially in a time of high inflation and low interest rates from dealers desperate to sell their products.

I will list the repairs I’ve done on my 2 vehicles with 200k+ miles on each. I have owned for 7 and 10 years

>starter
>distributor
>batteries
>bearings
>brakes
>tires
>oxygen sensors

That is a decade of daily driving for about $1,300 in repairs.

>Buy good used car for $5k
>Drive it up to 200,000 miles
>Minimal repairs except routine maintenance, always go by manufacturer's schedule, use synthetic oil, etc.
>During this time frame, save/invest over $500k
Seems like the best strategy.
If you're a frugal/cheap loser who doesn't have a good job, it's all for naught if you can't save/invest money.

>Owning multiple cars is always a shit.

Not really. Believe it or not there are people who go outside and need actual utility beyond commuting to work with their vehicles. It's very nice to have both truck and a car.

I don't own multiple vehicles, but I absolutely will when I can afford it.

How are your control arm bushing and shocks still alive? How is your clutch still alive? How is your exhaust not rusted out? How does the car not need to be repainted? Etc.

Maybe if you own a real estate business or are super into something specific like offroading.
