I was thinking of getting a security + after getting shilled at my old workplace by a coworker who was also studying for it, because I'd like to get into cybersecurity. I have linux cli and a little bit of kali/ hack the box experience, but no prior IT experience. I know cyber isn't something you can just walk into, and I'm expecting something entry level at first.

Honestly though, at this point I really don't care. I'll go into any field, even a low paying entry level job if it means I can work remote. I am a US/Japanese dual citizen, so ideally I'd like to get a job with an American company and move to Japan to enjoy the benefits of living somewhere cheaper. Or just fuck off to Vietnam, where I've spent a lot of time as well.

So what IT certs would make it the easiest to get a remote job that pays at least ~$25/hr? Should I go for security +? Reddit makes it seem like it's impossible to get a job even with stacked certs, while youtubers make it seem like you'll get one thrown at you.

Recommendations bros?

The brickzilla cert is legit, 6 months boot camp and you will be comfy with for life anon

Sure, get the cert, but as you're studying for it you should really pick up an entry level IT job in the meantime (even if it's Helldesk LOL!)

would also like to know if this is worth aiming for, I have similar-ish (but less) experience than OP and would also like to be a remote work cybersecurity warrior

Dont go to security + without doing the basic comptia first.

Sorry im not reading ur whole post, but im a devops engineer myself currently “working”
I like the shameless self bumping tho kek.

Ask me stuff if u want i might reply later.

But yeah, get the basic one first, then if u have an aptitude for networks get ccna, if not, get some linux cert.
Add containerisation to that and u should be golden for most.

If all that learning seems too hard, just start working, apply for 1st tier tech support jobs or junior type positions if you have to.
Apply and go to interviews and TALK with them, thats the key.
If you want ask what the ideal candidate looks like, try and compromise say you have lots of learning to do, mention. Youre on your way to getting certified in such and such. Be honest with them, and take the stance of (hire me i have potential) even say ur fine taking pay cuts to start, but after trial 3 months youd like to discuss the growth and potential for increase.

So yeah, but apply, and show up for interviews, otherwise u wont know what ur missing. And apply for the jobs u think yr too good for, as well as the ones you think are above you, even if it says X years doing this or that

How old r u btw

I would look at the comptia trifecta, although it's all bullshit, they might as well rename them to acronym plus. You could do all 3 and still have no fucking idea how to practically do anything BUT, they are very useful for getting your foot in the door.

The certs PLUS IT experience is what you need. I don't know why Microsoft retired the MCSA. That was a good cert

I fully intend to lie about my experience to get past cuckdesk and the likes. I lied to get my last job and that was in a lab working with PHI and I was working with bio grads (I dropped out of college).

So with a sec+ and fake professional experience, could I skip A+ and network+? I went over the A+ materials and I already know all of it anyways.

Dont lie, inflate the truth maybe.
Also i dont recommend going to sec
