Most growth comes from loans

Someone told me that most domestic growth doesn't come from people making more and better products, but in fact comes from high street banks creating money by giving out loans.
He said to me that banks when they give out a loan, don't actually take the money from someone's saving account and give it to person requesting the loan. Instead they just create the money from thin air due to an agreement with the central bank.
This seem completely bullshit but I don't know enough to argue with him. Is it true?
