Reducing tariffs on jap steel was why the American steel industry all but collapsed in the early 1980's. US Steel was the biggest company in America at one time. This buyout is actually pretty sad if you're over 40 and from the rust belt. I assume Nippon steel stock is pumping rn if you're into stock trading, but as far as PMs, only certain high carbon grades for knives (timken badger steel comes to mind) are feasible to hold for long term value, and you'd need make sure rust doesn't eat it away lol.

Lol. Nips make a lot of specialized high quality steels. They're really cutting edge when it comes to forging processes and are some of the first to attempt new casting processes too. But, the US makes some awesome specialized steel as well. Most of the big families that owned the US steel mills that crumbled in the 80's moved into smaller scale specialty metals production, so as a country we've been at that game hardcore for over 40 years. It's just weird to think that the japs crippled the US steel industry, then bought the (former) biggest steel company in the US in 40 year's time. There are some ruthless ass businessmen lol.

The Japs have been doing it that way the last 1000 years and with this reset coming a lot of companies will go under and will force steel forgers to return to this way of metal fabrication, in regards to them crippling your industry, that was you're own government who handed it over to the Chinese.

My dad's first job out of school as a chemical engineer was at US Steel in Pittsburgh, apparently the mighty furnaces and mills were as awe-inspiring as they were fearsome. Said someone inspecting a pneumatic piston had his fingers cut clean off by ultra high pressure air when he ran his hand over an area with a micro crack/leak, pretty nuts. He got a safer job as soon as he could lol.

I still remember seeing the Bessemer iron furnaces from the highway as a kid at night. Crazy shit. BOFs of any type are pretty few these days. Most all new steel is remelted scrap in electric arc furnaces. Anyway, this is the trend now: foriegn companies buy our biggest industries and while not much changes on the operations end, more of the profits leave the country. Seeing US Steel sold to Japan is pretty fucked up though.

>> No.57018886

Small scale specialty steel production means heat sizes of may 5-25 tons that get remelted numerous times. You're imagining some kinda hand forged sword or golf club head making operation which is not something that has a huge market. Also, I clearly said tariffs were what caused the Jap steel to flood the US market and hurt domestic manufactures. It wasn't Chinese steel.

And almost all of that scrap is getting shipped off to China too. When I was young I remember way more random rural overgrown junk car yards rusting away, farm dumps full of obsolete cast iron implements, piles of old structural steel etc. It's happened too gradually for most to notice but the informal "inventory" of economically accessible iron and steel all that represented has been greatly diminished. In WW2 we had pretty intense scrap-drives for the war effort, but if we get cut off and have to do it again I'm not sure we have enough junk to adequately supply the needs of industry, or sufficient huge specialized mining machinery that can be reactivated to generate enough new raw ore and metallurgical coal, most of that has been chopped up and send as scrap to China too. Kinda precarious position our leaders have left us in.

I'm not into the scrap steel market, but I don't think there's a huge shortage, or if there is, it will likely relax as China's massive construction drive is winding down. It's very very expensive to make steel from ore vs remelting and blending scrap, and the most of that basic oxygen furnace infrastructure is gone in the US.
Anyway, it's more psychological than anything seeing US Steel sold to Japan. I think NuCor is owned by the French and I can't even keep up with who owns GM or Chrysler anymore. Most of the jap cars sold here are made in the US or Canada. Shit's all kinds of fucked up lol.

I'm not saying there's a shortage per se, but the millions of tonnes of easily accessible scrap informally stockpiled all over the country we used to have started getting cleaned up in the late 90s and shipped overseas as Chinese demand for it grew. In the 2009-2013 timeframe scrapping got kicked up a few gears because of unemployed people trying to get by, Obama's "cash for clunkers" and because the astronomical prices scrap fetched for a while turned lots of people into opportunistic scrap-mongers. I remember prices as high as $420-440 per ton for cast iron like engine blocks and water/sewer pipe so that stuff hemorrhaged out of the country and definitely hasn't been built back up. If we ever need to mobilize for a major war I dunno how much easy scrap steel we'll really be able to put to use. Not super important but it's something I've nooticed and thought about occasionally.

China built thousands of miles of high speed rail and a surplus of commercial and residential space in like 15 years. Combine that with their mammoth manufacturing base and they were buying everyone's scrap. That trend is going down now.
All domestic steel manufacturers that supply raw materials to DoD contractors have to keep a certain amount of strategic inventory on hand in case we go to war. The DoD manufacturers will get their stuff first, though the raw materials markets might get fucked. That happens during any war though.

It's funny to think that communist China's first successful "economic trade zones" were selling scrap metal from their old boats. Now they've likely moved that market around on a global scale numerous times with their own usage demands.

Indians are pretty savvy PM traders so I honestly doubt there's much of an arbitrage opportunity there. If you want gold-filled scrap what you should do is slurp cheap antique gold filled warranted 10/20 year pocket watch cases, they can have enough to be worth chopping up and dissolving out the base metal core in acid to collect the karat gold foils.

Thanks fren! I've tried looking a few different times and can't find anything on the babby Barillas medallions, Bob said he reached out to people in the token world a while ago and didn't learn anything either. You may own basically the entire surviving global supply of those things lol, niche as hell but still cool to have a monopoly on something.

Here's the cute Mexican bracelet, newest coin is the single 10 centavo from 1907, then there are 8 little 5 centavos. They'd be pretty nice coins if not soldered into jewelry, old Mexican silver is good stuff. Cost around $11, the clasp still works and it's all intact so ya can't go wrong at scrap price.

Nice, it will be a great gift with tiny budget. I too love mexican silver coins, they all look great on the reverse (but not so much on the obverse, mexican leaders aren't usually pretty classy kek). Got myself a 5 pesos in the last order 2 days ago. 27.7gr, pretty big for a circulating coin (well, this one was commemorative "Ano de Hidalgo, but was the same size than the normal Hidalgo one).

Idk if it's hackers profiteering from the complete centralization of data/lack of compartmentalization (just bribe somebody high enough in the hierarchy for his password and you get access to everything), or if it's the next step of globohomo psyops. I used to think they were gay, back when I was younger they weren't even worth pulling out of cheapie coin bins for $0.25 each, but more recently I saw that they sell for 2-3x spot on eBay. Not sure why, maybe to use as "silver" poker chips or to fill chests with more affordable treasure. My dad has been collecting them for me at spot price, gonna clean and shine up 100 of them and see how much I can get as an experiment. I figure people who want silvery poker chips would pay extra for shiny ones.

For the last three years I had been collecting “copper” scrap from my job. Nothing crazy, just always neat to find copper. Today an electrician saw me grabbing some and said “you know that’s just copper covered aluminum right?”. I went home, checked my box full of “copper” wires, cut a few in half to reveal ALUMINUM. Fucking hell, I thought I had $500 (150 lbs) of copper. The pain is unreal.

Yep, good raw chrysocolla is often worth as much or more than malachite as specimens. Most of the stuff on the market is dyed so collectors love the real deal.

Another interesting bit for the copperchads

native copper nugget. The silver miners in my area would just throw these away so you can find them on the mine dumps sometimes. They can be hard to distinguish from melted copper from house fires. Stuff like coins and copper plumbing, gas, and electrical fixtures would melt in a house fire and form stuff that looks a lot like native copper nuggets. They can be distinguished from native copper by the crystal structure.

I also want to own some personal coal mines (especially cannel coal) and little quarries/mines of various lucrative rocks, minerals and fossils I've had my eye on. Also a few 100+ year old city garbage dumps, the land is often super cheap but the antique bottles and relics buried can be worth a fortune. Ah shit, one other big one is that I want to buy the property in my hometown that had an underground saloon in a cave, it was sealed up in 1920 and hardly anyone knows about it now but I've done research and obtained 120 year old papers from the business. It was a constant 60 degrees fahrenheit all year round, 25-30 feet wide, ceiling was 20 feet high, and it went back 150 feet. Has a well inside too and some smaller side passages and booze storage spaces too from what I can tell. The city council would sometimes hold meetings there on super hot summer days, a nice option before AC. The 1950s house and 1 acre property the cave is under sold for 100k in 2003 but the neighborhood nearby has deteriorated so probably wouldn't cost any more now. Enormous development potential, imagine having a big party cavern in the middle of town that people could rent and have weird weddings or raves in, there's nothing like that place for hours in any direction. Countless possibilities, a cool bar/club or restaurant could be set up, or wine cellar, cheese cave, or mushroom growing operation could find a home there. Maybe I'd want to move in myself and ride out the nuclear apocalypse in there lol, who knows.

Kektop. The average stacker wants to buy a literal garbage dump with his garbage rocks!
(Iqdeleting aside, that’s an interesting business plan. Guess at that age it’s probably not that bad, but I would be really careful to make sure it’s really only from that age. the entire thing is that turquoise blue chrysocolla you see at the top of the picture, with some darker green malachite in it. But my fear is that the dark blue azurite is just a surface crust and I'd lose that if I polished off the oxidized layer. I'm a fan of azurite so I've never cut or polished the thing. It could probably be cut so I would save the azurite on the surface and see if it extends deeper into the rock, but I probably won't try it. I see no indication the blue is more than skin deep.

>100+ year old city garbage dumps
based and comfy.

one of the places where I lived as a kid back in the day, there was an old "bottle dump" we knew of, at the end of an alley in our neighborhood. The alley ended at a deep gully. the gully was well forested and it was easy to sneak around in without anybody seeing. People used to just drive to the end of the alley and throw their trash over the side. so, all along down the hillside, from the top of the gully and directly downhill from there, you could see remnants of old junk partially buried, partially exposed in the hillside.
the dump was from back around WW1 or WW2 era, having not really been used for several decades probably. so, any perishable goods or household type of garbage that would possibly be rotted or stinky, was long since decomposed, so there was no nasty smells or nasty rotting things.

there were things like old car tires and rims, old metal bed frames, random old iron junk like old car frames or ancient cook stoves. any kind of old used discarded goods form people's houses, garages or backyards.
The dump by the time we visited it was well overgrown with grass sod and what not and no longer in use for trash dumping. So, we would go down there looking for treasure sometimes. we found old bottles, old toys, old glass electrical power line insulators, all kinds of stuff. the kind of things you might see at an antiques store.

one our favorite things to do would be to wrestle one of the old just tires from the ground and roll it downhill. the gully was steep and deep, so the tire really went. it was a hoot. Occasionally we found something neat like an intact color glass bottle or old porcelain dishware. probably there was more valuable things lying hidden there.
I've been to other old city dumps similar to this where we would regularly find old copper and silver coins.

Kek, yeah I'm certainly not above wallowing in rubbish all day. Modern landfills are very different from the dumps/landfills of the past, up until the 1910s there isn't usually much besides the random wad of asbestos or cake of hard white lead paint to worry about in normal household rubbish dumps but as the country industrialized and the chemical industry advanced we started churning out all sorts of poisons and carcinogens and nasty petrochems which all had to get dumped eventually so you can find some foul stuff in 1920s-60s dumps, they're usually too new to be worth digging in though. The spot I have in mind was a pond that got filled in over a few decades in the mid 1800s, wasn't dumped in after the 1870s so exotic toxins would be minimal. It's still a vacant block of land in a negro enriched part of town, probably can't be built on because of the water level and softness of the ground so if it goes up for sale it would probably be pretty cheap. There are probably individual items buried there that would entirely pay for the whole "useless" property, and in total enough stuff to net several million. Guess I should actively pursue that instead of just thinking about it lol.

>>57031093
Yeah the azurite is very nice, would be cool to judiciously remove a bit more of the degraded cortex stuff but it's still quite pretty as-is. Those miners really did have access to wonderful material.

There is an overlook not too far from my house, where as a child I would throw pennies and other small change, I would love to get into the woods with a detector but the drop is fairly steep. And of course they've ruined it by adding this hideous overlook. Back when I was there it was a rocky outcrop with no railing.

Probably loads of old coins etc down in the woods

Long time no see, gentlemen. I went the homeowner route and have been putting money into the new home rather than metals lately. Bought the house about a year and a half ago and assumed my crusaders were sent to the old address and just gave up on them.

Hell yeah thanks for sharing, it was stumbling across dumps like that as a kid that really drew me in to the digging hobby. It's when I figured out that ya had to dig deep to get the best oldest stuff instead of just scratching around for easy surface pickins that it got really exciting. Found a fair number of coins myself too, a few gold rings and nearly a kilo of old sterling that got tossed, I assume accidentally for the most part. I know a few guys who've found gold coins while digging dumps, but that flavor of lucky day has yet to arrive.

I looked into a handful of DCA options because I’m too Jewish to pay premiums on gold below 1 oz. If you’re a crypto refugee like me who wants to scratch the weekly or even daily 20$ contribution to your sick online gamer portfolio than go right ahead. Honestly, just typing this out makes me want to look up the options the big gold dealers have and do exactly that. I’ve wanted something more tactile and I’m too burnt out on any other means of investing that nothing but gold and silver interest me anymore.

If they’re trustworthy enough to pay out when asked; I think it’s cool. I’m hoping it will make me second guess a pack of cigarettes or a bag of chips. The only serious risk is if you’re saving up for a 10 oz bar and the world shits itself right before you cash out. That’s where “if you can’t hold it you don’t own it” anon is valid.

Why though? If you have any use for a 10 ouncer you're beyond the point of needing to save pocket change. And really, all they're doing is keeping your money for you. It's no different from you keeping your own stash; you could make a separate account for gold purchases and still have better access to the money if you need it.

That type of service only remotely makes sense if you want to use them as a vault so you DON'T have physical possession to prevent theft. That's not logic /pmg/ subscribes to, but still.

This is the only answer at the end of the day. Save in increments until you reach your goal and repeat. These services get their pay from storage fees so you ultimately are paying more for your metal while suffering all the risk.

Find somewhere no one will ever find your stash and you’re safe.

I've got a couple spots like that. Old ghost town dumps. The property is relatively worthless and can't be built on. But people hang on to that kind of thing here. If one ever came up for sale I'd definitely drop the couple thousand to buy it, but so far no luck. One good bottle, token, or medal from the town would pay for the land easily.
