how accurate is my understanding of these things?

Equities Trading:

>Purchasing a race horse, and the value of the horse either goes up or down over time. You have to buy the race horse to own it, and if you want your money back, you sell the race horse back for a profit or loss. You can optionally use the value of said race horse as collateral to potentially buy more race horses by doing something called a margin loan at the cost of interest, but that's trading with borrowed money and can help or hurt accordingly. Can also sell race horses you don't have to buy them back later ideally if they fall behind, in something called short-selling.

Options Trading:

>Purchasing a piece of paper saying that this race horse you may or may not own either crosses this finish line by this date or doesn't (call or put). Basically you are betting on the movement of the race horse (underlying) in relation to the location of the finish line (strike price) in a set amount of time (expiry): It either crosses the line (in the money) within the time period stipulated or it doesn't cross the line (out of the money), with the starting point of the race horse its initial moneyness, and the amount of time-in-the-race its time value all baked into premium pricing. At the end of the race if you don't get out before it officially ends (closing out the contract before time), an exchange of stuff is made depending on where you stand (assignment), with buyers able to do this technically any time they want (exercise).

>> No.56981085

Futures Trading:

>Purchasing a piece of paper saying this race horse has X amount of time (expiry) to move up or down in a race with no set finish line. The farther it moves in a direction compared to your starting point (long or short), the more one makes or loses money in real time with their account gaining or losing money at-that-time (spot price). The flip side of this is that it costs a lot less money to get in on the ride (initial margin requirement), but if things go too much in the wrong direction the bookie might close you out early or ask for more money to keep you on the race (margin maintenance). At the end of the race if you don't get out before it officially ends (closing out the contract before time), an exchange of stuff is made depending on where you stand (delivery).

Forex Trading:

>This one I have the least understanding and experience of. It works like Futures trading but is conducted in pairs, such as the relationship between an American Race Horse USD and Japanese Race Horse YEN if they are in the same race track with no set finish line? The farther one race horse is to the other, the more "valuable" that horse is to own at that moment, with contracts trading like Futures in that they have set time periods for the race duration, complete with a initial margin and margin maintenance system?

Have never gone race horse betting in real life either, just using this as a kind of plain English explanation.

Forex is the simplest. You're just trading back and forth things who's value fluctuates relative to eachother.

idk why you make all these race horse analogies. It way over complicates things.

Derivatives of pretty much any kind can by synthesized by linear combinations of long and short options (sometimes, like in the case of durable goods insurance, the multiplier isn't fixed and has volatility.) Each end of a futures contract is just eg a long call/short put or vice versa.

options trading is not as binary/straight forward as gambling on sports. you need to learn about the greeks. its not like betting on the clear favorite in a sporting event and getting low odds but they win and you still win a bit of money. with options it can end in the money but you end up not making money because of time decay. lets say you buy a call option that is going to expire in 5 days. just for simplicity for this example, it has a theta of -$1. so three days pass, and the underlying stock price stays the same, and your option remains in the money, but the theta has decayed your option price. now your option is worth $3 less than it was before, even though it is still in the money and there is still time left. as in your horse is winning, and the race hasnt ended, but now your winning ticket is worth less. you would need that underlying stock price to increase to get that decayed time value back. its not just about picking the "winner".

surely picking the winner still matters though? i thought options just add dimensionality into the ordinarily 2D line relationship of equities: now theres time involved. like you said, it is about picking the winner but also picking the right time for the winner to get there and/or keep going yeah? like in your example, it can be in the money and end up a loss since it wasn't moving. its not just how the dice lands, but the time for it to land there (what could be OTM one week is ITM next week yet it expired early, meaning a trade thesis was right, but poorly timed)

Today was a rollercoaster for me. At one point I was down a wild 15%, but I hustled my way all the way back to the green. Just when I thought I was in the clear, the last 5 minutes pulled a fucken rug on me and I ended up down 0.66%. Markets be playing mind games, no cap fr fr.

If you have the money to buy shares, you can tell your broker to exercise. You could then short sell shares in the post-market to neutralize the position.

In my case I sold CCs, and assume some MM was my counterparty, and then the stock pumped on some Friday evening buyout news which caused them to exercise the options, despite them being seemingly worthless at market close.

I'd ask her to come into my office. Then instead of being mad talk to her about it, and reveal everything I've learned from /biz/. She is impressed and we bang.
Eventually I get her pregnant. I already have a wife and kids but they don't need to know so just have this new finance family on the side.

Nothing will happen tomorrow because of this. The market may even gap upwards to hit the resistance point it was at exactly 2 years ago. I'm confident in this because every time /smg/ is unwarrantedly bearish or bullish literally nothing happens since you guys are always calling for the giga meltup to 5k on the SP or dump to 2500 when in reality we're just in crab city.

The point where it dumps comes AFTER the options expiry, once the big players make their longs or whatever they all dump en mass to rotate their portfolios. Violently ass sharting dump for a week or two, then the market recovers like it was nothing into the new year. Waka Waka.
