the value of an option is based on a.) how far an option can go in the money and b.) how likely it is for that option to go into the money. making lots of money on speculative options means you have to follow the rule of buy low sell high.

buy low: you need to pick options that are cheap. the major factors that play into this are time to expiration (lower is cheaper), distance OTM/ITM (more OTM is cheaper), and volatility (lower is cheaper).

sell high: you need to pick options that you can sell for a profit. that means the option has the opposite of above--it needs to either be further dated (which can be done with calendar spreads), more ITM, or more volatile.

your problem is you hopped on the train too late. there's no such thing as a free lunch, making 100x trades doesn't happen on a whim. 0DTE options can be 100x profitable if a company makes a large, unexpected major move on a Friday during market hours. it truly has to be unexpected, which makes those sorts of trades hard, if not impossible, to find. those 0DTE winners are all just lucky lotto winners; very few replicate their success more than once.

the best way to get ahead of the game is to scout out companies that might make sudden, unexpected moves. if you can buy a LEAP on a company while there's very little IV, you can make tons of money on your prediction if things turn out the way you expected. The leddit guy who made all the money in GameStop was sitting on later 2020/early 2021 LEAPS purchased in 2019.

Huge battle going on in the crab zone. It's flat as fuck but taking a ton of work to keep it there.

You can see the downward pressure increasing at an insane rate compared to the upward pressure which has been steadily rising each month.

On red 1 you see a steady downward push to keep the line crabbing (yellow)

the steady upwards movement between green 1 & 2 created a pressure point once it hit red 1, it was met with a violent thrust down to the crab realm (red 2) in spite of it being a very slow rate of growth.

The channel between 2 & 3 had much more upwards pressure and was met with a slightly more violent pressure from red 3. Back to the crab realm again.

Then you have more slow movement between green 3 & 4, until it hits green 3, anothe rpinch point, another thrust back down, but it seems to be locked in above green 4 and red 1, so it continued to grow all the way to the pinch point between green 1 and then was brought back down violently by red 4.

We may see it go back to the crab realm this week, or it may be locked in somewhere in the upward channels.

I'm expecting strong upward growth in the near future

Archegos wanted to short GME but didn't want to write on paper that they were short GME, so they opened up a swap position instead with CS as the counterparty. CS, since it had essentially a long position with the swaps, hedged by opening a ton of shorts on GME. So if GME go down, they make money on the shorts, if it goes up, they make money on the swaps, basically a net zero position who's purpose is just to let their buddy Arch fake-short GME. Arch got assimilated by CS, which means CS now has both ends of the swaps, cancelling them out. Since the positive swaps are cancelled out that means their open short position is no longer hedged. UBS saw this and want to back out of the deal because they'd be getting all those shorts. If they do the shorts fall to the DTCC.

They're playing short hot potato, essentially. Except instead of throwing the potato you die and someone else has to pick it up or it explodes and everyone dies.

Hi everyone, seeing a lot of posts and comments misunderstanding the basics of how swaps work. Here is a simple explanation using the Credit Suisse (CS)/Archegos situation.

Archegos wants to short GME, but doesn’t want regulators and/or other players in the market to know about it. So they decide to do a swap, which allows them to legally avoid reporting a huge short position (they just have to report the swap, which doesn’t specify “short GME”). The counter-party charges them for providing this service in the form of swap premiums. Archegos is willing to pay swap premiums to hide their position, and they think they will make more profit than the premium when GME price goes down. The ideal counter-party to their swap is a market maker who has legal exemptions around both naked shorting, and reporting on short positions in general. Part of Credit Suisse’s business is market making, so they work as a counter-party for this purpose.

So now Archegos opens swap where they get paid by CS if GME price goes down, and they have to pay CS if the price goes up. This is essentially a bet between the two parties that is outside of the traditional market involving shares on exchanges and dark pools, etc.
However, CS doesn’t want to take the other side of the bet, so they open a normal short position matching the amount archegos wants to synthetically short (aka “hedging the swap”). This DOES take place on the traditional market, and drives GME’s price down like any other short.

Found this interesting tidbit in the Archegos/Credit Suisse report from 2021 in the cringemines:

"In addition, it appears that on March 12 Archegos renewed swaps in excess of $13 billion, with an original maturity date of March 29, 2021, for 24 months (with the same initial margin) at Archegos’s request. CS documents suggest that the renewal was a mistake. Looking at the chart, around 3/12/21 is when GME started it's long decline. A day prior to that we had our giant red mid-day spike that stopped the second run after the sneeze. Perhaps CS saw their position getting untenable in the days leading up to the 12th (because GME was running) and bit the bullet (no pun intended) to renew before things got out of hand. Seems like maybe they panicked, renewed for 2 years to buy time, and now the 2 years has elapsed with no improvement for them. If this is true, they're even more boned now. he battle is not between hedgies and brokers. In the US or Germany. It is between German brokers and Clearstream or Euroclear. That battle reflects a secondary battle between Clearstream / Euroclear and their US Custodians. Which in terms reflects a battle between the US Custodians and the DTCC. Or rather the NSCC which ‘nets’ trades across the market. Balances trades between market participants to limit the amount of cash that has to be transferred if the trades cancel each other out. Kinda like ‘cancelling‘ sums or characters on each side of an algebra equation to reduce the equation to its simplest form. The GME Corporate action could not be ‘netted’ in the usual way because it falls outside the normal parameters. The dividend shares have to be balanced or accounted for differently.

The DTCC/NSCC absolutely LOVE the concept of and the word ‘netting’. Why? Because it conceals fuckkery. The DETAIL of what really went on is obscured and ‘cancelled out’. The books appear to balance, so everyone is happy.

So what happened here is German brokers started asking Clearstream / Euroclear awkward questions which got passed on to the US Custodians who in turn started asking the NSCC/DTCC awkward questions.
