dollar was down fairly big, 103.882 low, now back above 104.269
this is in spite of all the bad economic data we got today, dollar going back to green, as yields are getting crushed (with no disparity between EU and US yields)
VIX also went back to green
buying dollar back to green in spite of fundamentals + bid VIX + buying of bonds across market = fear day
what is causing this fear trade?? fears of recession..

Anyway, oil taking a massive dump because of fears of a slumping economy? At the same time, steel has recovered nicely and is nicely pumping because apparently we are building a lot of infrastructure. Copper is holding steady and gold/silver mooning. DXY is also kind of neutral. If demand destruction is truly happening, why is steel up then? Shouldn't copper also take a dump? On the other hand, I guess it makes sense since public spending by the state could go up to maintain some semblance of control and that is why steel is going up? Products from oil like polymers are holding still.

Actually as far as I know, Russia has had loads of deals in the background and were exporting way more oil than what officially stated. This also lead to oil prices taking a dump some weeks ago. They and others want to produce oil. It's good business and a necessary one. Limiting supply is not exactly a long term solution for them.

What I don't get is some attributing this to EVs. Just last week or a few weeks ago the market was completely FUDing EVs and how the world is done with them. Suddenly they are back?
Nah, this massive drop can only mean two things in my opinion. Someone has started to produce way more or the market is expecting some sort of cooling down... but then, why aren't the indices down?

My tinfoil hat reasoning is that all the big players are in agreement to fill their stockpiles for cheap since they have reached a deal to soon fight wars against each other.

Apart from that I can not come up with anything that would explain why oil producers (and everybody in between) are happily parting with their finite product for less and less compensation. The rampant inflation over the past years has hit everywhere but oil, the lifeblood of the world... It's borderline mysterious.

>flipped from backwardation to contango
Backwardation is what happens when spot is high, contango is what happens when it's low. We flipped at $77, that means $77 is the equilibrium where the market felt it would stay stable.

See that's the funny thing, people at $95 said "demand is high! geopolitics! production cuts! Oil at $100-$120 soon!", now at $72 they say "muh expensive gasoil, muh recession, muh seasonality, Oil at $50 soon". They don't understand that they have no edge, they know what the market knows, they're bullish because the market is bullish which is why the price is high, and they're bearish because the market is bearish which is why the price is low.

What they should understand is that in commodities you position yourself to benefit from the news that aren't in yet, you buy depressed commodities when all the bad news are in because the next thing that happens (but which is unforeseeable based on what you know about the state of the market) is something that wipes the gloom and doom away.

In theory yes, but in practicality I don't think they're ever going to exceed sustained 8% growth annually while China was hitter 12% at its peak. Just way more structural issues that aren't enough to stop breakneck growth but are enough to prevent it from hitting China levels.
