This is a commonly held belief, but giving one dollar or such is not sufficient to prevent the will from being challenged. Many have successfully challenged that the dead must have made a mistake when writing up the will.
An estate planning attorney will include a disinheritance clause naming the excluded beneficiaries so that there is no doubt.
Even simple and seemingly obvious wills get challenged and ultimately torn apart all the time. If you try to hide little tricks in your will, you're just guaranteeing that your property will get locked up until the legal battle ends and the heirs that you actually want to give your money to will suffer for it.
