is coinbase actually based? should i use them or someone else to start my stack? who do you use to buy coins?

ETH is the default wallet, but you can set up other chains as well. Metamask can't do BTC unfortunately so you'll have to do something like Atomic wallet. But between Metamask and Atomic you should have pretty much all the bases covered.

Use electrum for btc. However there is an extension wallet for btc called unisat, its how you can buy ordinals

As far as exchanges coinbase is the best fiat onramp because you can instantly withdraw the cash you send to it. Advanced trade has pretty reasonable fees. If you need to buy something cb doesnt have you can always send tether to another cex, or an L1 coin to metamask or the L1's metabasis equivalent
