Looks like Gary is giving up on miners and everyone will be selling at a loss. I still am in awe how he told us we were going to avoid the bloodbath. How we don't want to be holding when it happens. How we want to buy at the bottom instead. Then he tells us to buy. The very next day he predicts a bloodbath, but instead of saying to sell, he insists it wouldn't affect us. When it is clear it will after day 2, he still tells us to hold through. Finally it bottoms and wow what a surge, too bad it did nothing but break everyone even. If we did buy at that bottom, we would still be up. Now instead of selling with a 10-15% gain, now we sell at a 3% loss. I wish he stopped being so egotistical and change plans when new factors kick in. Instead he tells everyone to calm down for 4 days then when everyone's fears come true "alright, looks like we need a change of plans".

yep posted this one several times in the past few years, fantastic doc on one of the toughest mining projects in a century. That whole complex is incredible, the underground operation is in my opinion even more interesting then the surface workings, its slowly working its way down through the mountain, on to something like 40ish levels deep in 3 different separate operations.

we havent found every near surface deposit, but they are getting harder to locate. The future of mining is in the far north in my opinion, baffin island, greenland and the arctic circle to be precise. The south pole is loaded with resources too, but good luck ever operating a mine there.

That isnt all fudd, permitting and building a road is a very expensive and time consuming project, one that often kills off a project before it gets off the ground. Look at what happened recently to Eskay Resources and their coop plan with Seabridge Gold for a branch exploration road to their properties from KSM. Its costs ballooned rapidly, to the point Eskay couldnt uphold their end of the deal. Its not a deal breaker right now, but lets see what the costs to build snowline's project into a real mine looks like in 5 years.

There are all sorts of videos out there floating around prospecting circles from the Amazon and the southern mountain belts showing incredible mineral deposits, stuff like diamonds the size of golf balls being picked out of termite mounds or placer gold strikes that make the Yukon rush look small. The rule of thumb I've heard for regular city and suburban roads is they cost about a million dollars a mile.
Mining in a very out of the way place, perhaps in a cold climate like the far north, would cost huge money just for road access. Hundreds of millions of dollars, perhaps, because the road has to be well built and well maintained for all the heavy trucking that will be traversing it.

bingo, your not looking at hundreds of millions, but well in the tens of millions for sure, not counting the eco investigative work and "consultations" you have to do now with local groups to get the OK to start building. A road in northern Quebec was recently shot down if memory serves because the Inuit population would have to cross it to hunt, apparently their incapable of walking over a hump in the flat landscape but oh well.

It's complicated. They get major tax breaks, preferential hiring, if they choose to live on a reserve the gov't gives the reserve money so they can sort of live off that if it isn't corrupt, they can fish & hunt whenever whereever sort of deal (they have special licenses).

It really is that they're just "sticking it to the white man", and of course some are just naturally contrarian and belligerent. 70% of native americans polled support the natural resource industry because it gives them job opportunities.

GLAFT / GLO gonna moon this week, me thinks. Canadian uranium company with a major mine in Niger.

Down big since the Niger coup, though the coup ended up not being a big deal. But they struggled to get financing, especially since the US designation of a coup complicated that process.

The stock halted on Friday while news came out that they had specifically been given an exemption, allowing them to receive financing from US banks. This is a big deal, both in how it derisks the project, but also the message behind it - that the US REALLY wants this project to go ahead.

Still needs to rally around +40% to get back to where it was before the coup (after already being up +55% from it's lows in August). This would bring GLATF up to around $2.20. It then ALSO needs to rally hard to catch up to it's peers, which are only continuing to go up, which I would estimate puts GLATF being around $3 (at least).

It's habbening.

if your interested in super deep mining, the best place to try would be on the mid atlantic ridges, or the subduction zones along the Ring of Fire. There was an idea in the early 60s to setup massive deep sea platforms with protected casements which would act as head frames for deep mineral exploration, but it never got further than the drawing board.

Also drilling core through ice is a massive headache. If your drilling on a glacier for example, your drill stem bends with the slow moving action of the glacier, so if your not careful, the stem will snap. You cant redrill those holes either as the ice moves too much to ID where your bits end will be.

look into Project Iceworm and its sister program whos name escapes me. The USAF used an RTG setup to thaw tunnels in glaciers in Greenland for a below ground base, then used the reactor to heat the place. Brilliant idea.

There is also a really interesting idea from the 50s on how to do deep mantle exploration using a massive amount of explosives / heat, a massive high grade iron deposit and a nuclear powered probe. The theory is that you detonate a huge explosion that melts the iron into a big old slug, then have the probe follow the molten metal down on its way into the mantle. It likely would never work due to differences in material density, but a great idea none the less.

Your first main problem is where to store it. In most towns you can't just store scrap metal anywhere visible in a residential area. So we're talking fences at the very least, with sheds or warehouses being the best bet. You'll need to own the land, nobody wants to rent their land out to a scrap metal business because of environmental concerns. These are also your problem even if you own the land. There's a good chance your land will be contaminated with various hazardous substances which will be your problem to clean up.

once you have storage figured out, you need transportation. Most of the stuff you're thinking of like appliances aren't worth transporting because the fuel and time to move them cost a lot more than they sell for. But if you live near a scrap buyer it might work.

The actual money is in stuff like aluminum, copper, lead, platinum, electronics. But that's very specialized stuff. Usually cars are the best source for that kind of scrap, but good luck storing and processing thousands of cars to scrap.

another decent source is jobsites and industrial sites. Those guys waste a lot of copper and sometimes aluminum. But again, they've got companies offering to haul their stuff off all the time.

Your best bet if you want to get into selling scrap is to do it as a tax loss, since it's very easy to lose money on. But that means you need taxes to offset. Like thousands of dollars, maybe millions. You basically want to be a millionaire BEFORE you start up a business that loses that much money.

Doing outby labor you have to lift 80-100 pound logs repeatedly, while stooped down sometimes if the coal seam is lower, and carry them 30 feet to the post or crib you're setting, and you do it fast paced. I know miners who drink almost a gallon of water during an 8 hour shift from all the sweating.

Also, you might be swinging a sledgehammer to demolish cement walls to control airflow, or carrying 80 pound solid cement blocks to build walls like a block mason.

Coal mining is very heavy work, at least for many of the positions in a mine.

Roof bolting is also extremely hot, being next to the roof bolter machine, and fast paced.

But from what I've heard from industry guys, more coal could be produced -- there is demand for it -- if the mines could find enough people.
A lot of coal miners have left in the past decade of downsizing and a new generation of miners hasn't fully picked up the slack. We need new blood in coal mining.
