based, even though they are smaller than the OG 8 reales or earlier Pesos and just .720 I think they are among the better designs of the past century, they're really nice fondlers. Years ago when silver was $5-6/ozt my dad started casually collecting AU/uncirculated 1920-1945 pesos and fractional from dealers selling bulk foreign "junk" silver at scrap price, definitely a good move in retrospect.

>I don't know anything about the Elymaid kingdom, currently reading about them on wiki to have a QRD. There is a very sumerian/persian look to these coins, they must be quite rare!

Yeah I didn't know much about Elymais either, my knowledge and interest in coins/artifacts/history kinda peters-out once you go further east of Greek and then Roman dominated Asia Minor (modern Turkroachistan) but the collection has given me a great reason to learn more. Close to half of the collection consists of different coins from Elymais when the state was a vassal under Parthia, many seem very rare and a few may be unique (above ground) but demand is limited so values aren't anything to get too jelly over. Also lots of Indo-Parthian, Kushano-Sasanian and some other assorted pieces from that general part of the world.
>The large one on the top left is very impressive and well preserved.
The big silver coin? That's a Sasanian drachm of Kavad I, evidently struck sometime near the end of his 2nd reign which was AD 499-532.

Much more interesting and impressive is this high grade Kushano-Sasanian bronze struck by Ardashir I, the last king of the lowly vassal/tributary state of Persis (as Ardashir V) under the Parthians. After about a dozen years as the vassal king of Persis he got tired of their bullshit and took over Parthia himself around AD 224, which marked the founding the 400-year Zoroastrian Sasanian empire. The coin is in remarkable condition and appears to have original luster remaining in the fields which is ridiculous for a 1,800 year old copper/bronze coin, but maybe it came from a very well preserved cave hoard that was sealed in a jar like the dead sea scrolls. Whatever the story is it doesn't look like it was dipped in acids or chemicals, I like it.

>How much did you pay for the lot?
Total of 80 coins (I miscounted before) that he wanted $500 for, so I paid him with 2 10 ounce PG&G bars that cost me half of spot and some spare time. Pretty good deal eh?

>are there any data or anecdotes about the use of precious metals in America during the Great Depression?
a few.

first, gold and silver mining were outlawed during WWI and WWII because miners were needed for war metals. So industrial mining of precious metals was almost nonexistent outside of some huge mines such as the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, as well as some gold mines in Colorado and California.

so not a lot of mining.

metal currency was hoarded. Metal currency was ALWAYS hoarded, but during the depression it didn't circulate much at all. Anyone who got paid in silver or gold either couldn't afford to keep it and passed it on, or more often COULD afford to keep it and hoarded it. So people didn't see a lot of metal money during the depression. This contributed to the banning of gold ownership in 1933, as most people simply hadn't seen the stuff in decades anyways. This was also pretty common in good times, and an extreme problem in the dozens of depressions before the great depression. Outside of the gold glut caused by the California gold rush, and the silver gluts caused by the Comstock and later the Leadville silver strikes, precious metals rarely circulated in the US. Paper was far more common, and most people probably couldn't afford to walk around with even a dollar in their pockets anyways. That was a lot of money back then, so stuff like quarter eagles and up were outrageous sums to just carry around or spend for most people. Especially during the depression when work was scarce and cash was virtually gone.

Panning gold for food became a thing. Dudes in Denver were staking out spots on Cherry Creek and panning as hard as they could all day long to get a fraction of a gram of gold to buy beans and a sliver of meat to eat. Maybe some bread. The entire length of the creek was worked and reworked over and over. Places with more gold saw similar activity, with unemployed men lining the banks to pan enough gold for a cheap dinner.

my pleasure, it's a period of mining and money history that fascinates me.

I spend a lot of time metal detecting in some of the richest mining towns in US history, and the one thing that always strikes me is how extremely rare gold and silver money was among the average people.

I find lots of pennies and nickels, but almost no silver and I've never found a single gold coin in a town. I've never found a silver dollar. I've found a half dollar, and a few dimes, but those are very rare finds from the 1800's to early 1900's.

I've never found gold or silver from the depression era. It's just not there. Money was always scarce, gold and silver almost non-existent, but during the depression it goes away entirely.

part of this is because of the value- if someone dropped some gold or silver they're more likely to search for it and find it. But part of it is just the fact that almost nobody had the stuff during the 1800's, and apparently nobody at all was using it during the depression.

you're welcome.
another interesting story

my grandparents were pretty wealthy, but when I was a kid my grandma would take me out to look for pennies. We'd spend a few hours just walking around looking for pennies. As I got older I just thought it was a weird hobby of hers or something, but my aunt told me that during the depression that was her job. She'd finish her housework in the morning and then go hunt pennies in the roads to buy some food. If they were that hard up for money, I can only imagine something like a silver dime or quarter would've been an enormous windfall for them. Gold would've been unimaginable.

Very interesting, thanks for yet again sharing some of your tasty tidbits. And I agree that paper currency and bank checks served as tender far more than people now might imagine. Coins certainly got around, but aside from based schizo proto-stackers few people had reason to distrust paper and inconvenience themselves with the weight and risk of loss imposed by more than a small handful of coins. I think part of your detecting experience is due to oletimer detectorists in the 50s-70s cherrypicking the big easy obvious coin signals/readings long before you started swinging but the rest is for the reasons you outlined.

possible, most of the ground I cover has been worked over and over again. I'd expect silver dollars in particular would be easy pickings.

gold on the other hand reads like iron on those old detectors. Starting in the 70's when they started discriminating out iron they also filtered out gold. Places I detect are full of iron, undisturbed for ages. Nobody bothered digging a large iron signal. I find coins in those iron patches, but never gold, and rarely silver.

One of my finds was an 1800's nickel coin from Austria inside a steel can buried a good foot down. I was amazed my detector got it. Those old guys missed a lot of coins. And they were using machines that couldn't tell a silver coin from any other, and probably couldn't find gold at all in a bunch of iron.

Even if my detector could pick up a nickel over a foot down I'm pretty sure my reaction to such a signal would be to just keep moving, it's good to be good. Regarding the oletimers, the first ones started swinging well before the first beaver-tail pulltab was even invented, and those ghost towns were 60-70 years younger and fresher then with many more structures and features to work with and coins that hadn't sunk themselves down as deep due to freeze/thaw cycles and were also buried under less overburden from wind, erosion from uphill or rotten crumbled structures. I bet more than a few rusty iron patches you've dealt with in recent years were left by what were still recognizable remains of structures or intelligible features in the late 50s. I'm sure you are well aware of all that but I do like thinking about what those guys saw and found back in the good ole days of treasure hunting, the pics in ghost town books from the 50s-60s and treasure magazines from 60 years ago are more arousing than a full harem of 10/10s, wish I could go back and experience all that.

Which man didn't dream of becoming a deep-diver treasure hunter at least once? Imagine the excitation going through your spine when you find a spanish galleon 30m deep large of the coast of Florida, after months of studying old navigation maps, reading through ancient cases of ships lost at sea, trying to figure out their path, asking locals for legends, etc...

A while back i watched a french documentary about such treasure hunter in the Philippines, and you could tell the man wouldn't want to do any other job, a true adventurer, but he was explaining as politely as humanly possible that finding a treasure wasn't the hard part. It was dealing with local authorities to keep even a tiny fraction of what you found. It's endless paperwork for the authorizations, seeking permits, greasing the right paws, etc... and when you finally find something, you have to barter endlessly and they always suspect you kept some for yourself, so he was getting audited and raided by cops all the time.
Pretty disgusting to witness, as if the flip corrupt government was any more legitimate to get their hands on dutch or british gold lost at sea centuries ago than this guy, actually busting his ass to have only a tiny chance at discovering something and risking his finance and life for his passion.

It’s for people that lend more toward the Irish side of their heritage. I’ve been dumpster diving since I left home at 18. One of the best detecting spots I have in my area is in the basin of lead mine runoff. I dig with my hands 2 feet deep to snag a standing liberty quarter. It’s a part of it. If you can’t handle getting dirty don’t even buy the rig to detect. It’s always going to end with you at a bottom of a hole with your hands, the shovel completely forgotten.

Hmm, no I actually hadn't thought about doing that, but it's a good idea to locate specialist websites and forums where collectors of these obscure coins might congregate. Parcels sent to Iran from the USA would likely get scrutinized by glowies on both ends but I have nothing against Iranians, it would be cool to send the coins back home where they'd be most appreciated.

I'm lucky my uncles used to hang out in those old towns back in the 60's and 70's when the buildings were still standing and a handful of people still lived there. I've spent so many hours picking their brains out at the townsites for memories of how they used to be, what they used to look like.

For me it's a zen thing. I'll spend an entire year detecting the same ten feet of ground over and over again until I've picked it clean. What makes me think I'm getting an accurate census of the coins in use it the token ratio. Back in the 60's and 70's those old ghost town tokens traded for about $35 each, roughly equal to an ounce of gold. They're no easier or more difficult to find than any other coin. So the oldtimers had a strong incentive to pick up the tokens where they could find them. They were and still are the most valuable coins a person can find out there.

I find about 2 saloon tokens for every US coin I dig. Which tells me a lot of saloon tokens got thrown away, but also that coins weren't very common at the time. Or if they were common, people didn't lose them often. Because those old timers would've taken the tokens and the coins if they found 'em, not just the coins alone.

I spend all day digging in lead, mercury, arsenic, every sort of bacteria, antique kitchen trash, and lots and lots of 145 year old human shit. I've never gotten sick off any of that, but it's not a clean hobby by any means. You come home with pockets full of dirt. Covered in dirt. If you're doing it right, your truck will be covered in dirt. It's filthy.

the only real health hazards I've run into are bee stings (lots of them, you're sweeping grass all day with a detector and bees hate that) and near misses from people target shooting in the area. I carry a gun. Not to shoot anyone, but to let people know when they're shooting in my direction.

one of my favorite detecting stories involves 4chan, maybe somebody itt.

years back I was detecting in a dirt road. The road is relatively new, it went in in 1893. They ran it right through some older house foundations. So I get a good signal under a rock slab in the dirt road. I pull up the rock and find an 1856 seated half. The rock slab is almost a foot thick and about a meter across. It's part of an old house foundation, the SE corner of the house.

So I'm telling this story on /pmg/ or /out/ and some anon tells me that masons used to do that. Put a coin under the SE corner of a house they built. So this isn't just some rando coin lost in the 1860's, it's evidence of Masonic activity at that time.

Stuff like that is cool. Not just the coin, which isn't worth a lot of money, but the story it tells.

Neat story fren.
Too bad they weren't using their FM silver tokens to do this. Were they a thing in the US too? Over here we got many differents designs of presence silver tokens from various lodges. Especially circa 1800-1900 when they were widespread in society. Here is one from the Paris' Isis Church, 1808.

nah, our masons used copper pennies as challenge coins. You'd show membership with your copper penny. I don't have any, and I've never found one in the dirt. I'm not a mason even though my great great grandfather was.

I kinda think masons might be up to some demonic shit, but I don't know. Anyways in the US they didn't use a lot of silver and gold. I have some of my ancestor's masonic shit, but it's all copper and paper junk.

Well, idk why i said silver, there are some, but it was reserved to the elite lodges. Most lodges here also had mainly brass/copper token. The Isis one i posted is in zinc.

Picrel is one in silber from my collection from the GODF "philanthropic house" of Paris, who still exist to this day. And yeah, they are up to demonic shit, but to them the demon is a liberating force necessary to reach godhood and Equilibrium, so it's ok. :)

One can only be judged upon his own merits, and it's cringe to take pride from actions made by others than yourself.
Even if in truth, it's quasi exclusively nepotism and bootlicking who allow people to ascend in our current world.

Yet, even if you want to create your own path, it's not a reason to deny who you are and where you come from. Understanding how you came up to be what you are. It's a bit more devoid of sense now we all are kids of the state rather than kids raised by the tribe/family, but it's important to remember. For one, because we live in full 1984 and the government/judeocracy constantly rewrite our history to control us. And now they are going after archiving websites and can edit old pages at will, nothing saved online is safe from censorship.

In this tech-dystopia, who will remember 9/11 was a false flag 40 years from now if you don't tell your grandkids about it?
Who will remember the lolocaust was a fucking scam or the horrors made in the name of "the greater good" during the scamdemic?

CMMG is not willing to listen to my miner shill so I want to shill it here for my stacker bros.

Gold miner Dundee Precious metals:

>1.29 Billion
>mines 290k oz per year (and some copper
>AISC is $840
>already sits on a pile of cash (560M or 43% of mcap)
>keeps making piles of cash every quarter despite not selling everything it mines
>past 6.75 year mined 207k oz gold and 17.2Klbs more than it sold
>doesnt mention their gold/copper pile in quarterly reports or interviews
>trades at 7.5 times earning
>7.7% of mcap is used per year to pay dividends/buy back stock

If the gold/copper pile is true and I'm the first to discover/highlight this, this company has dollar/gold/copper reserves of perhaps 80% its market cap and is thus being valued at maybe 300 Million tops for a 290k oz massively profitable ($840 AISC) production stream.

I've been following the mining space for 15 years now and this might be the best buy I've ever seen.

Agreed. Definitely one of the best-looking coins/series.

The generally sell for about $40+/oz on eBay, which is why I don't buy them. Mexico also went through several drastic inflationary periods and then have a metric shit ton of different weights and fineness of silver coins, which means you kinda have to know what you are looking at to stack them.

1968 25 Pesos are OK, because they are common enough (and ugly enough) to be cheap, and are a hair over 1/2 oz ASW.

1951-1954 5 Pesos are OK stackers too, because their weight and finest are printed on them (same as at the God-awful 1977-1979 100 Pesos)

My favorites are the 1955-1956 10 Pesos, because they are big, 90% Ag and they are also imprinted with fineness/weight.

>metal currency was hoarded.

Like >>56597796 said, Germania mint is in Poland, i don't know where they got their name.
Germany has Gold and Silver Bullion too, it called the Goldeuro and gets released in different weight classes, the most sold is the 100€ 1/2 oz coin.
They are sold near spot by the Bundesministerium für Finanzen. The motives change every year. We had a series Deutsche Städte (German cities, with Goslar, Kassel and so on) and Deutscher Wald with local fauna.
We also had a cool Grundgesetz (constitution) series, Einigkeit, Recht und Freiheit, 2019, 2020, 2021.
Every coin gets minted in all 5 official German mints in Berlin, München, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg in equal parts. So if you buy a 2020 Einigkeit coin, you get it with 5 mint signs. Collectors love that shit, now they can buy 5 of the same :-)
But the Austrian Philharmoniker is far more popular, even in Germany. I don't know why. I for one just buy the cheapest internationally recognized coins, Brits, Leafs, Nuggets, Phils, Kruger.

>shermer the squirmer"
t. David Irving (the foremost scholar on WW2, and prolific author, overall brilliant man)

shermer is the quintessential midwit for the masses, even appearing on joe rogan a couple times with his persona being the "open minded skeptic" who takes a roundabout way to get to the "acceptable" mainstream position, but making sure to step just slightly out of line so you can feel smart thinking you explored every avenue of a "conspiracy" while never really leaving the reservation.

for an example here is a debate between historical revisionist Mark Weber vs "Shermer the squirmer" https://www.bitchute.com/video/38oqCM5RsYz6/

>Mexico also went through several drastic inflationary periods and then have a metric shit ton of different weights and fineness of silver coins, which means you kinda have to know what you are looking at to stack them.
For years I've enjoyed pulling the goofball .300 silver (also .100 1 peso) Mexican coins from "$0.25 each" cheapie foreign coin boxes some coin shops and dealers at flea markets have sitting out, they're nothing special but even shit-tier billon silver is hard for me to leave behind when so cheap.
>1968 25 Pesos are OK, because they are common enough (and ugly enough) to be cheap, and are a hair over 1/2 oz ASW.
A good option for stacking weight cheap, I really don't like the design but that makes the prospect of letting them go perfectly painless.
Definitely better than the olympics coin, but you didn't mention the big daddy 30 gram .900 5 pesos from 1947-48! That's my favorite of the cheaper newer crown sized Mexican silver coins, though lately they've carried a premium making them not as attractive if going solely for weight. Mexico also produced the first true 1ozt bullion round I'm aware of (33.625g of sterling silver) in 1949, those chonkers are interesting pieces of silver stacking history.

Every one in a while I see a batch of really well-done few-ozt statues going by on ebay. I'm suspect it's a garage sculptor who has a 3D printer to make the wax or resin or whatever. I just searched the silver section for "cast" and got lots of hits (pic related) Pricey af though - you've got to really be 'into' whatever it is.

The result will look awful bro, pours wont work out for the details, you need a hydraulic press to have a good looking coin. And do you really see yourself pouring a thousand of them?
That will be an insane amount of work, i don't think you realize.

IF the test trials work I’ll be making 5 oz to 10 oz coins which would be worth my time. A hydraulic press is an option but I would have to get custom dies made.

I always thought casting doesn't create nice coins but I was impressed with how these turned out.

I have never seen those before. Just looked them up and the prices for one note are ridiculous. Tell me more about them.

i remember exchanging usd for them when we were checking into our hotel. they had different characters on different denominations. the paper felt like a normal dollar bill. i think i probably have a few at my mom's. i'll have to look for them next time i'm there. the exchange rate at the time was 1:1, if i remember right.
