Here our tokens (who are tokens of account for the most part, were used as money) aren't worth anything for the vast majority. The other tokens i didn't win, they ended up selling for 10-11€, for 300 years old silver tokens with a quite limited mintage, much more limited than coins from the same period. Speaking of old stuff, look at what i found being auctioned at 1€ over here, a V1 replica to put on your desk.
Probably was gifted to some of the GFW engineers who worked on the project and few high ranked luft officers. Couldn't find anything about it online, so idk if the item is legit, but looking at how many ppl are following the sale (60+), it might very well be.

I really love these huge chonky ladles and spoons fren, they were likely rather uncommon to begin with, but after 200 years of being melted down there can't be many pre-revolutionary serving pieces still in existence. Current resale/retail values for such things fall in a very wide range, I see websites which cater to richfag egos offering and actually selling nicely polished but unremarkable 18th century silver items for 3-10x melt value, items which you can get at scrap price all the time. Nice pictures and a paragraph which convinces the wealthy customer that such venerable antiques are a credible flex of their refined taste and superior intellect really opens up their wallets.

I noticed the XVIIIth silverware fetching the biggest premiums per gram over here are definitely the stew spoons/forks. I know you like them too, you know, the ones weighting 140g and more. The longer they are, the more expensive. Saw one going for 450€ not long ago, but it was quite the piece, the kind requiring a garguantuan mouth lol.

Yes, mostly as account helpers. It's Napoleon who introduced the decimal system to divide our money (100 cents = 1 F). But before that, it was an absolute mess, like you needed 7 sols to make a denier, then 3 deniers to make a gros, then 5 gros to make a patard, 2 patards to make an ecu, 8 ecus to make a livre...
It was an accounting nightmare. Those tokens were used by their weight to have a kind of standard.
Also, it wasn't rare for money to lack during wars), so the guildes of merchants, the local bankers, the churches even,.. made their own coinage when official coins were lacking to smothen local commercing.

That's interesting, I haven't read about the industry but assumed most would have been made by larger scale specialist companies as with glass or stoneware, but stamping stock sheet metal isn't as technically challenging so local production makes sense. Imagine finding the location of the ghost town token mill and digging out their dump or finding some rusty dies to inspire the envy of other token autists. I've been wondering if you've tried cleaning any other tokens, or made any recent purchases of crusty cheapies you know you can transform into much more desirable specimens?

Regarding that seller, I think he might be an oldfag collector, maybe he has a network of jewelry or coin store owners he has a relationship with and buys inventory from at melt price which he knows can be sold for a premium? That bell is pretty awesome but just 20th century. The simple charming unpretentious elegance of 17th-18th century silverware may not capture one's attention like highly decorated or complex articles, but I find it extremely lovely and "honest". Regarding the tokens I understood that base metal ones were used in accounting but being made of precious metal would be unnecessary if they were just counters, then I read this:

Today's purchase: a 1878 Morgan Dollar. Very good condition for "XF"--usually Liberty's hair is worn smooth. Damage was $38 and change.

1878 is a significant year because the US began making Morgan dollars pursuant to the Bland-Allison Act.

Previously, the US government had stopped minting silver coinage with the Coinage Act of 1873, helping kick off the Panic of 1873 as deflation caused investors to hoard cash instead of lending it out. Additionally, the increasing real cost of labor led to high unemployment and strikes. The worst off were Midwestern farmers, who were highly levered and suffering from collapsing wheat prices. In the period between 1873 and 1878, the price of wheat had fallen from ~$1.00/bushel to ~$0.60, all while the real value of their loans only increased due to the deflationary effects of demonetizing silver.

As a result, in 1878, Congressmen from Iowa and Missouri created a bipartisan proposal: the US would purchase a set dollar amount of silver every month at market rates from the productive silver mines of Nevada, and turn it into coinage. This was a compromise between the interests of lenders (generally Republican) and the indebted Silverites (generally Democrats), which opposed/supported free coinage and the associated unchecked inflation. Anyone know where to find mintage figures of the Krugerrand, Maple leaf and Britannia?

I'm trying to compile an overview of 2006-2022 but cant seem to get it complete.

So far though couple of interesting things:
Gold mintage of the biggest bullion coins is 45.4M whilst Silver mintage is 900.3M
(this is without many years of krugerrand, maple leaf and brittania production)

Thats less than 40% of 1 year's worth of global gold mining supply but 1.1 times silver's yearly global mining supply.

I guess gold is more often invested in by buying bars than bullion whilst with silver this is the other way around?

Still curious though.
Since much more of silver's global mining supply is wasted year over year, whilst gold stays in vaults somewhere i thought bullion mintage of gold would be higher.

Also, how did people invest in silver pre 2006?

Do you know where the factory was located? If it was in the middle of downtown I wouldn't hold my breath, but if on the outskirts and on a parcel with irregular terrain or a nearby ravine they may have dumped/landfilled on-site instead of sending everything to the main town dump. It would be super cool to find a wagonload of floor sweepings and cutouts sprinkled with "error" clipped planchet or double struck tokens they culled and tossed.

It looks like it can be improved and the spots of crud cleared off, but be careful as the appearance of the rim in the upper right quadrant suggests it is a bit corroded/pitted and crystallized, the surfaces will be trickier and you don't want to accidentally chip off some of the embrittled embossing so don't get too ambitious, less is more with that one.

Yeah, the token manufacturer was right downtown, took up the entirety of the largest building in town. They also did plumbing and mechanical/machine work. I figure if the dies didn't get scrapped they went to the town dump when the place closed. Find one and you'd probably find them all. I've got a few error coins with clipped planchets from that maker. It seems they just sold their error tokens for use instead of tossing them. A couple of the clipped planchets are in this pic

Thank you for advice on the Sammon coin. I also really feel like that rim is unstable, was just thinking of concentrating on the center of the field. The reverse also has some crud or corrosion that could probably come off. I don't want to ruin it, but it's one I don't intend to sell so if for some reason I fuck it up a bit it's all my problem. With those circumstances, you don't. You can get around 5% by just putting it into a high-yield savings account. That's what I do. It's relatively low risk as even if the bank goes under you're covered by FDIC. Of course both of these require some level of trust in both the banks and the fed. Obviously, it's entirely possible that both of those things fall through, but 1. I think that possibility is pretty low. 2. Chances are if that happens I'll have bigger problems, 3. That's part of the reason why I stack.

It's an acceptable risk IMO and I say that as a pretty financially-risk-averse person.

If you want 10% you're probably going to have to do some actual investing, by that I mean the kind that carries a non-negligible amount of risk.

Why are you claiming silver is a bad investment? It's one of the many tangible assets that is greatly undervalued as commodities are rigged to keep supply countries poor so people can consume cheap product. Silver is in growing demand as it is the best conductor of heat and electricity. These properties are needed for high efficiency and power electronics ranging from medical equipment, missiles, wireless transmitters and mirrors for nano electronics fabrication. Not only that silver is a biocide and is needed for water filters, medical equipment and cutlery.

With a global silver supply of ~1.2bn oz a year, and a price of ~24, that means one rich person can buy the entire planets yearly supply and corner the market. There is very little silver available in reserves ~3bn ounces for the planet and this will be frozen for the militaries if anything bad goes down... unless you hold your own physical gold and silver. The undervalued asset should be ~$800/oz at current prices so the $24 or so a ounce I paid last week is a fantastic deal. It not a quick pump and dump, but if you hold silver long enough (like a 401k, or a house) you'll probably get some good returned in 5-10 years, maybe sooner if BRICS kicks in, hyperinflation destroys the USD federal reserve fiat ponzi scheme. Then we have to repeg, where gold goes silver follows.

The mining ratio is 1 gold for 8 silver, but there is probably more gold available in vaults than silver as silver is used up all the time. When Africa breaks away from USD control, prices will go up like Uranium's have. After all this talk, I might buy some more shiny sintce it is payday. I see 10oz bars for $25.10 at a favorite online dealer. I have no idea where you find the 300-400% premium scammers here. I was happy to pay my $72 for my anonymint round as some are for me to pass on the the grandkids and tell the stories of you online trolls while I'm comfy in the next currency restructing.
